This seems to be a popular sport for folks looking for a day out and relaxing with the sound of water breaking the silence. There is a walk around the river down to the bridge. You could also try a swim, if you know how. Saturday was crowded but some semblance of social distancing still existed. The weather was also great. Ice creams galore! Parking is reasonably priced but could be difficult finding a suitable spot. Coming to the designated parking area is not easy on this narrow road, and really needs to be considerate of emergency vehicles. Another worrying trend is that I saw a few bits of disposable face masks floating down the river from the falls. There were also a few BBQ fires which is supposedly prohibited. It would be a pity to let this pleasant waterfall and park degenerate because of litter and other rubbish discarded carelessly, and...
Read moreI personally find something quite majestic and soothing about waterfalls. These ones are small falls but set in a scenic area which adds to their appeal. You can enter the river and climb on the rocks, but be warned, they can be very slippery. They are embanked by huge rocks which if you are feeling adventurous, it's worth a climb. The water is cold even is Summer but lovely to dip your feet into for a little walk around. There's a reasonably priced carpark there but it's a short walk from the town center and a lovely walk to the falls. There is also a viewing area with tables and benches for you to enjoy and public toilet facilities as well as a shack selling snacks and light refreshments. Opposite the car park is a large playground. There is also a pathway leading to gardens along the river which is also very much recommended (well kept...

If you stroll down Millgate at the south-eastern corner of Richmond's market square you will come to Riverside Road which, as its name suggests, runs along the north bank of the river.
Just as you reach the river you come to a series of lovely waterfalls, where the Swale drops over a low ledge that stretches almost completely across to the south bank.
Above the waterfall is a shallow pool where children like to splash, and you will usually find families gathered by the waterfall for a picnic.
I've visited the waterfall several times. I...
