Margate is a good place to visit for a half a day or a full day if you want to hang out on the beach. The beach itself is not the most scenic as it doesn’t have white soft sand but it’s not horrible, just hard. They have rental kiosks for chairs, umbrellas, wind shield tents, etc. I only saw one person in the water as it’s a bit brisk.
You can see windmills off in the distance and the water was a bit murky but to be expected with its location.
There are restaurants (many with fish), ice cream stalls, candy/sweets, bars, a small food hall, and souvenir shops but I also noticed a lot of places were closed down which was sad.
There are some art galleries featuring local artists and one even gives lessons on the beach once a month.
Dreamland has arcade games that require money (up to £1) to play like air hockey and skeet-ball. You can win tickets and trade them in for prizes. Dreamland also has an amusement park which in addition to rides has a large area with artificial grass for people to sit and watch the big screen TV. Cricket was playing the day I was there. Surrounding that area were some food stalls and kiosks like fish n chips, pizza, a bar, burgers, and naughty floss (freshly made cotton candy with fun flavors).
The only ride I went on was the carousel which was bumpy and in need of repair. It also went very fast.
The roller coaster is small but looked fun and they have a lot of other exciting rides for adventure seekers. There is also a section of rides for very young children. Entrance is free. You just top up a Dreamland card with money and use that for the rides. The ride operators scan it to ensure you have enough funds (for example the carousel was £2 pp). You can top up your card at any point and they have a list of rides and how much each costs.
There is a train station that brings you straight to the beach area near dreamland so it’s extremely convenient...
Read moreMargate Beach is one of the best seaside spots in the UK, combining classic charm with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. I recently spent the day there and was thoroughly impressed by how much it has to offer.
The beach itself is spacious, clean, and ideal for families, couples, or solo visitors looking to unwind. At low tide, a wide stretch of golden sand is revealed, perfect for sandcastle building, beach games, or simply lounging in the sun. The water is clean and safe for paddling or swimming, and lifeguards are present during peak times, which is reassuring.
The iconic tidal pool is a standout feature—a great place to take a dip if you want to stay in calmer waters. For those who prefer to stay dry, the promenade offers stunning sea views and a great selection of cafés, ice cream stands, and fish and chip shops.
Margate Beach is also just steps away from the Old Town, where you’ll find quirky shops, art galleries, and the Turner Contemporary. The convenience of having everything close by adds to the appeal, especially for day-trippers.
Clean public toilets and accessible paths make the beach user-friendly for everyone. It's also worth noting that the sunsets here are absolutely breathtaking—definitely worth sticking around for.

Read moreMy first time visiting margate , I easily found parking 5 mins from the beach (Dreamland carpark). The beach was very busy ,it was a weekend and hot, so that was to be expected.
The beach itself was a nice sandy beach and very big ,my honest opinion. I don't think I'd come back, a lot of people playing loud music ,bbqs right next to other people on a extremely busy day ,people drunk ( yes it's outside and people want to relax etc but when I have to shout to talk to the person next to me it annoying ,people drinking in the sea and leaving there beer cans in the sea along with dirty nappies on the beach and sea ,so much rubbish everywhere .
I only found one public toilet and the que was very long because people were using them.as changing rooms . Needs to have more public toilets . The sea pool was not so nice again my opinion it there was a small and wasn't nice was very slimy best to go in the actual sea which was better we even saw fish .
There's rockpools which my kids loved as they like looking for crabs and fish and we found some just wear beach shoes .
Evening time we went in an arcade which was ok my kids won...
