My brother and I visited the Greyhound Hall of Fame on November 11th, 2023. We found out about this museum entirely due to chance - as we were going to visit the Eisenhower Museum right across the street, I was reading about Abilene on Wikipedia, and saw that this much smaller museum is located in the town. As dog owners, we had to make time to see the place.
The museum is quaint and rather cute, but also informative and serious as needed. Upon entering, we were greeted by the museum curator and two very lovely retired greyhounds, Max and Ginger. We then took our time to see the exhibits itself, including a preserved greyhound skeleton, awards through the years, and information on the history of greyhound racing. There is a tiny gift shop that includes memorabilia such as postcards and plush greyhounds.
Admission to this museum is free. We spent a little over a half hour there, which was sufficient (given our tight schedule) - if you have the time (especially, I imagine, if you have or have had a greyhound) I would recommend closer to one hour. Of course, take your time to pet the greyhounds. In my view, that was the best part. The curator was very polite and answered all of our questions. If you are a dog lover or just an animal lover, you can't skip out on this museum. Parking is easy enough; we parked at the Eisenhower Museum and just crossed the road to...
Read moreMy brother and I saw the Greyhound Hall of Fame on 11/11/23, having flown to the Kansas City area from CT to see the Truman and Eisenhower museums. We made the stop here, having realized it was right across the street from Ike's place. Although we were a bit pressed for time, we loved seeing the Greyhound HoF. The exhibits are very informative, and there are many interesting items on display (including an authentic greyhound skeleton). As dog owners, we were thrilled to meet the resident hounds (Max and Ginger, ages 7 and 13 respectively), and they were very friendly and calm. The curator was very hospitable, too.
Overall, this was a fantastic museum. Abilene is a bit out of the way if you're not visiting the Eisenhower museum, but I'd recommend this one to any dog lover. The only downside was that there were no dog-friendly items in the gift shop. Even so, we got some very nice souvenirs...
Read moreThis museum is clearly the work of people who genuinely love the sport of greyhound racing. There was a lot of really interesting information and displays with, of course, the dogs inducted, but also how the races are set up and history of the breed. It's impressive how many thing there are here, especially for a free museum.
Of course there is the controversy associated with these types of animal activities and the video and the display about how the dogs are bred and housed on a sort of mass scale by dog standards (the video even saying they prefer to be in the kennels all day) didn't exactly give me the warm and fuzzies, but there is also a lot of mention about adopting these dogs, so I think those involved with the museum don't have a callous attitude toward the animals.
When I walked in I was greeted by Max and Koko, which made the visit extra pleasant by getting to meet two sweet...
