This is an excellent hike into pristine forest filled with wildlife and intrigue. Although I didn’t make it all the way to the lake on account of being alone and the remaining trail was snowed in, I ascended nearly to the top of the mountain just below the snow line, where the trail curves to the right and ascends to the mountaintop and lake, more than 2 miles away from the town below. The area is teeming with wildlife everywhere, and on the way down I stopped for a break and sat on a large rock on the side of the trail close to the mountaintop to listen to the sounds of the living forest. After a short while of sitting and listening to mostly bird calls and the sound of the living animals on the mountain, I suddenly caught a chilling, spine tingling feeling and hopped off the rock and trotted nearly halfway down the mountain until the rooftops of Skagway were within my eyesight again and the sound of the town below was audible in my ears. The Dewey Trail should be considered challenging and could require basic climbing gear in some parts for safety because of loose scree and washed out, steep sections of the trail that are partially impassable, but I ascended off the side of the trail on the permafrost. Recommended that hikers attempting the hike go in pairs or groups, and be conscious of the incoming weather and snow cover near the summit. Do not go on this hike alone if you are a inexperienced hiker or you’re unfamiliar with the Upper Dewey Trail and the lakeside. Enjoy the Alaska Forest...
Read moreWent on a cruise and one of our excursion guides told us to try it. I had a bad vibe about it. My husband is way more adventurous than me, but after climbing around 30 to 45 minutes up, I slipped. My husband then slipped and all I could imagine is that he was going down. He slipped the second time and I thought he was a gonner. It was super steep and a high elevation. Luckily, some guys came out of no where to catch him from going down. God sent me an angel to appear and bring me a walking stick to help me get back down since now I was super scared. We never got to the lake since I was traumatized. Beware. Wear good grip hiking shoes and pay close attention to every rock you are going to step in if it's your first time. There is a long drop...
Read moreTrails was a rocky very narrow and slick with large steep cliffs. It felt very unsafe compared to other difficult trails that I have done, despite this saying it was an easy 0.7 mile trail. After passing the wooden bridge we heard a very close and loud growl, at first we thought it was a charter bus as we were still relatively close to the town, but we started hearing more growling, huffing and eventually roaring. We quickly backed up and almost slipped and fell down the narrow pathways. This trail is much more hazardous than what reviews say. I've heard black bears before and that definitely was a...
