The red onion used to be a brothel back in the 1890s and is now a nice touristy salon in Skagway..I'm a fan!
Red Onion Service: You're greeted immediately upon entry with a smile and everyone we came across was very friendly. We grabbed a drink at the bar while waiting for a table and the bartender was quick to get our drink orders in with a smile. The kitchen got our pizza and salmon dip to the table quickly. Excellent
Red Onion Food: We stopped in for a quick snack and beer: Both their meat lover's pizza and salmon dip was tasty. The pizza was more NY style, thin crust with lots of cheese which is how I like it. The salmon dip was fresh and the pita bread came to us warm. Nicely done.
Red Onion Ambiance: An retired brothel house, the theme is alive in and well in 2018. The women are dressed in brothel attire from that period. Decor on the wall from the brothel days with a massive collection of bed pans lined up near the ceiling. A very long bar was stocked with all the beer and booze you need for a quick stop. They offer brothel tours but unfortunately I couldn't check it out this visit.
Their souvenir merchandise is on point. Lots of funny accessories but their shirts and especially their hats have some very clean designs. The food is priced on the higher tourist trap side but it's nothing unreasonable. In summary, this was a great visit and if I find myself back in Skagway, I'll definitely swing by the Red Onion to grab a quick bite and...
Read moreI went here post having a tour with one of their madams so my review will be in two parts. 1st the tour: Ghosts and Goodtime Girls walking tour. It was beyound our expectations to have Madam Purity share about Skagway's history from the gold rush to the red light district to all what women during that era experienced. As a woman myself it was incredible to hear and see the sites. I highly encourage anyone visiting Skagway to go on this tour you will not be disappointed!
2nd the saloon. We decided to grab some beverages and something to eat after the tour. The drinks were delicious and so was the food. Our server was awesome and we probably could have stayed and talked to her for hours.
The building is orginal from when it was first built. If those walls could talk- I'd want to hear. Amazing artifacts from the era throughout too. Again, take the tour and gain understanding about the working girls...
Read morethis review is about the ghost tour that is run by the Red Onion
we took the good time girls ghost tour mid - september and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Madame Purity ran out tour and she was dressed in period costume. she walked us through the streets of Skagway and regaled us with tales of the town and the Women who engaged in "negotiable Love"
she dislplayed her shimmy technique and taught it to us so that we could safely traverse the streets of Skagway.
we learned a lot about what the women (sometimes Girls :( )went through in the mining town of Skagway.
there was humor but M. Purity still took a moment to go over some of the harsher - uglier - truths of life for the good time girls of the town.
the tour ended with a run through the upstairs of the Red Onion Saloon where we got to see what it must have been like to work there.
we would take the tour again, and so should you, if you are...
