I’ve been a member of Stone Age for about 5 years. Stone Age is a family establishment where children run around unattended (for better or worse), there are children’s parties on weekend, children’s rock climbing classes during the week, etc. Our family has relied on Stone Age as a place to relax, have fun, and enjoy the same activities.
Up until a few days ago there was a full time white male employee (in charge of safety and maintenance) that has a violent criminal record.
When an Asian female employee brought up this violent history to the attention of the owner (Brian) she was ignored, silenced, and shamed.
Days later it came to my attention that not only did this man have a violent criminal background but also a current restraining order against him INCLUDING sexual abuse of a minor.
I have a small child that climbs at Stone Age. She has spent time with that male employee!
Let me be clear. This is not ok and I am exercising a tremendous amount of restraint as I write this.
I have no words.
Except these.
Brian, I don’t know you but your actions/inactions went against every basic consideration of safety and concern for employees, members, and the climbing community overall. Either commit to growing and learning how to be a more responsible business owner (and better example to younger climbers), or pass the torch to someone that...
Read moreBest, largest and most comprehensive rock climbing gym in New Mexico. Anyone who loves to climb and moves to Albuquerque try this gym!
Offered: bouldering, top roping, lead climbing, auto-belays, hang boards, grip boards and walls, endurance treadwall, yoga, kick boxing, a small regular gym, Wifi, rental equipment, equipment for sale, year long and day to day memberships, classes on outdoor lead and trad climbing.
The route and problem setters change holds on a monthly basis. This place is awesome! My group and I climb here 2-3 times week. Twice annually informal (public) climbing competitions take place here and are a super fun way to show off what you have been working towards!
I have only small complaints: a) I wish they had two additional water bottle filling stations and more protein-rich (10g+) snack items offered. b) I wish the parking and adjacent road access situation would change. This is of course going to be an effort of collaboration by StoneAge, the neighboring businesses and the City of Albuquerque but something's got to change. People park in front on fire hydrants and fire lanes, drive too fast as people cross the street and the lighting in the...
Read moreDisclaimer: This review is from 2014 Really enjoyed every time I visited while I had a membership. They even got new gym equipment for lifting! If it had been a little closer, I would have worked out there every day. Routes are constantly rotating/changing and there's always a new puzzle to figure out. They do a great job at keeping the interior clean and swepted. Even the bathrooms are in pretty good condition. If you have kids and have thought about bringing them rock climbing, this place is great! I don't have kids but there are A LOT of them all around climbing and having fun. SA even offers classes for kids too, I believe.
My only gripes - Some of the staff can be kind of iffy some times with their attitudes BUT most of them are really nice and inviting. And the rental equipment is just okay, wish they had better shoes. But those are just minor things imo.
Oh, and I really wish they had a slack line somewhere, but that's...
