Chow Won Korean Steakhouse — Attraction in Alpharetta

I recently visited Chow Won Korean BBQ and had a mixed experience. While the restaurant was clean and the waiter was exceptionally nice and helpful, the quality and authenticity of the food left much to be desired.

The $20 lunch special offers a 42-option All-You-Can-Eat menu, which seems like a fantastic deal at first glance. However, the excitement quickly fades once you try the food. The cuts of meat were disappointingly dry and tough, making it hard to enjoy the meal. For a Korean BBQ place, I was expecting more authentic flavors and better quality meats.

Another surprising aspect was the overall atmosphere of the restaurant. Nothing about the decor or the ambiance felt Korean. They didn’t even play Korean music, which was a letdown for someone expecting an immersive dining experience.

I was tempted to try the Bubble Tea on the menu, as it looked quite appealing, but I didn’t get around to it this time.

On a positive note, the staff were all very nice and attentive. However, the owners need to seriously consider investing in better quality meats, even if it means raising the prices a bit. Quality is crucial, especially for a place that markets itself as a Korean BBQ restaurant.

This is a Chinese own and run restaurant masquerading as a Korean BBQ place.

The only meat worth eating was the beef. All other cuts were too dry. The marinated pork was the driest. I believe they used the wrong cut of pork to marinade as it did not pick up any of the flavor except just what was on the surface.

The kimchi was made with just kimchi powder from Sysco and mixed with vinegar and water. I know this because my aunt used to run a Chinese buffet and did the same to make the day old kimchi. Fermented kimchi is the only way to go for BBQ. Day old kimchi is for different situations.

The sauces were odd to say the least. I don’t believe the owners have sat in a real KBBQ restaurant. They only had yum yum sauce (Chinese American creation), teriyaki sauce (what? Why?), and hot chili sauce (more commonly used in Chinese or SEA cuisine). When I asked for ssamjang, they gave me gochujang from the kitchen.

The fried rice was plain and mushy The Korean fried chicken was the most bizarre, it was regular fried chicken tossed in KBBQ sauce. But that sauce is meant to be cooked. By just tossing it in the sauce as is, it left a strange almost medicinal taste.

As a resident of “Actual Atlanta! Atlanta” I will say that this is the best Korean barbecue place that I have had in the Atlanta area ! Even though this is in Alpharetta this has the Korean barbecue places that are actually in Atlanta beat! the food was amazing the best Korean barbecue I’ve ever had for one I’m a food critic! Very picky !
