I was lucky enough to visit DCA during the Halloween overlay, so I got to experience both Mission Breakout and Monsters After Dark, both are reviewed below.
There’s always a significant wait for this attraction, unless you happen to be at the front of the line at Rope Drop, but even then, it’ll be 15-20mins for this attraction. In my opinion, this ride is well worth the wait! I managed to ride this 7 times, twice with the overlay, but patience is key.
•Mission Breakout: I’d been anxiously awaiting riding this attraction for years, and it did not disappoint! Initially, I was disappointed that it was no longer Tower of Terror, but regardless, this ride was incredibly fun, and one of my top three favorite rides. The outdoor queue lags a little, but once you get inside, it amps up with the characters in displays from Guardians of the Galaxy. The pre-show is decent with a Rocket animatronic, both pre-show rooms show something slightly different, so it’s neat if you get the opportunity to experience both. Standing in line for the “elevator” really hypes you up, and once you’re seated, get ready for one hell of a ride! Despite being told what to expect, there’s no way to prepare yourself for what’s to come. All songs are perfectly suited for the ride; kudos to Disney Imagineers for the extensive thought and planning that went into this attraction. Every rider was grinning from ear to ear walking off this ride!
Monsters After Dark: this attraction overtakes normal theming around 4:00pm during the fall season. I highly suggest riding both if you get the opportunity! Although this is similar to how the ride normally is, Monsters After Dark has a more ominous vibe from the moment you enter the queue. There’s rattling and scrounging sounds as if things are trying to escape, and announcements say things have gone awry in the building. It’s (literally) dark, some characters that are normally visible during Mission Breakout are covered, and the queue video is different. The pre-show with Rocket is also different, which I found had an added level of humor with what Rocket tells you he needs your help with.
Once again, Cast Members were a standout for this attraction, especially during Monsters After Dark, they play up the fear factor. One Cast Member in particular was especially gifted with scaring the crowd, and made it an experience I’ll never forget! There’s one track for this overlay by Tyler Bates, so heavier rock than the usual songs, but it suits the darker version. The video while on the ride also has new scenes. You’ll see warnings throughout that this version may not be suitable for younger crowds, and yes, it’s creepier, but it wasn’t overly frightening in my opinion.
Highly recommend ALL versions of this ride, it’s a guaranteed fun and...
Read moreI hate drop rides. The feeling of falling is not an ideal one, and being strapped into an elevator plunging to the bottom of a shaft is less than ideal.
If you're like me, read on but be aware I'm going to spoil the entire ride. If you don't wish to be spoiled, just know this is worth it and I enjoyed it, but it can get a bit intense so those with weak stomachs should avoid it.
The ride vehicle is 3 rows of seats facing the front with a seatbelt/bar mechanism (I can't remember) and two handles to hold throughout on either side of a seat to brace (I was on the edge though). The ride begins with Rocket interrupting the broadcast (as the pre-ride show states) and playing music off of a walkman/tape deck for the entire duration of the ride. You are then suddenly whisked up and down to one of the "scenes" in a dark elevator shaft to acclimatize you to the experience. Yes, the vehicle actually moves, so hold on. YOU WONT MISS ANYTHING IF YOUR EYES ARE CLOSED, I PROMISE. There are 4-5 "scenes" with the second to last being a shot of the entire park (the doors open) before the greatest fall to the conclusion. This is where the picture is taken and it is at a lull to ensure you're not too terrified.
All in all, as I said, the ride isn't for those with a weak stomach. However - being Guardians of the Galaxy themed - it is a fun ride that plays with your expectations the first time and offers a thrill in a safe and enjoyable environment. (I partly predicted how the experience would go and was satisfied afterward.). I would honestly go on it again when returning and would recommend most teenagers to older adults (within reason, follow restrictions of course) to ride the ride. Don't let fear get to you, you...
Read moreGuardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! at Disney California Adventure is absolutely one of the best rides in the park! 🚀🔥 From the moment you walk up to the massive tower, you know you’re in for something epic. The exterior looks like it’s straight out of a Marvel movie — bright colors, futuristic vibes, and that iconic Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack playing in the background set the mood perfectly.
The queue is part of the experience itself. You walk through the Collector’s Fortress, and the attention to detail is incredible. There are displays of artifacts and creatures from the Marvel universe — it feels like you’re stepping right into a Guardians movie. And Rocket? He’s hilarious! The animatronic Rocket that introduces the mission is super realistic and funny — it really feels like he’s talking to you.
Once you get into the ride, hold on tight! It’s essentially a drop tower, but with a Guardians of the Galaxy twist. The ride is synced to an awesome soundtrack featuring classic hits like "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5 and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar. The drops are totally unpredictable — you’ll shoot up and plummet down multiple times, and you never know what’s coming next. The randomness makes it even more exciting! 🎶💥
The combination of the music, the drops, and the hilarious Guardians banter makes this ride an absolute adrenaline rush. It’s intense but not scary — just pure fun! If you’re a Marvel fan (or even if you’re not), this ride is a MUST. And since there are multiple ride variations, you can ride it more than once and have a different experience each time. Definitely...
