I honestly don’t leave reviews often, but I definitely would not recommend going Capital Plaza. It’s not a safe neighborhood.
They have convenient shopping and eating (all pretty low prices), but parking during busy hours is sometimes a pain. I just started working in the area, so I’ve been to the plaza 7 or 8 times. Staff in the stores are often blunt but they’re usually pretty friendly.
I’m easy to please and not easily offended, but I don’t particularly like this center and don’t really feel safe in the area. I’ve been accosted by people begging for money every single time I’ve been here, and even had one man bang on my car window because I wouldn’t roll it down to give him cash. On my most recent visit (10/14/19), I saw a woman urinating in the parking lot in broad daylight, and there were children in the area. I sat in my car and watched one woman trying to open each car door parked in front of Ross, but luckily it seemed like they were all locked (I did call the police, but by the time they arrived she was gone). They really need to hire a security force here and remove those who are harassing shoppers, being indecent, or trying to steal people’s belongings.
If you do shop here, I would suggest you don’t carry cash or valuables and I wouldn’t go alone. Be sure to lock...
Read moreIn a town where most people most people lived somewhere else ten or fifteen years ago, I have the unusual perspective of having witnessed the grand opening of Capital Plaza several decades ago. None of the original stores are there anymore, but, unusual in an age in which brick and mortar stores are endangered creatures, the tenants of this shopping center are strong and diverse. The McDonald's on this site was the first in Austin, though it's been rebuilt once or twice. There's always been a bank here, though that too has changed hands several times -- it's currently Chase. Cici's is one of those fun places that your kids will love, and there are also several fast food places on the Cameron Road side. I'm personally fond of the Buffet King's huge selection of Chinese food, Mongolian BBQ, and, just in case I forget where I am, there's some good Mexican food to ground me. There are dozens of specialty shops as well as big department stores...
Read moreI must say things have definitely changed. I usually regret going to Austin and my experience today at Capital plaza just confirms that. I was super excited to go to Melrose and Rainbow. Things are so picked over I had to leave.
Unfortunately, I believe it's the community in itself that has made things so different. When you walk in stores you have to turn in your bags to the cashier. Stores close early between 8:00p and 9:00p. The stores are all picked over like a rummage sale.
I'm NOT blaming this on the workers because they came to work and are actually working. They are there when they could have decided not to accept the position. I am very grateful for workers in retail, I was that person at some point.
There are a variety of stores there. I just wish the community will take care of the services that's being provided for them. Lots of...
