We did the Wizard’s Lair for my husband's birthday as a group of 8. 6/8 of us have done at least 5 other challenging escape rooms, generally enjoy puzzle games and have escaped all our rooms. This game is indeed challenging (we solved it in just over an hour. Kyle was gracious and let us finish since we were on the final puzzle). Our group had fun and we want to go back and try the magician’s room. With all of that said, there were some…technical errors? That halted our progression and left a few of us feeling less satisfied. The first being that I guess the things are all on 30 minute timers and half way through Kyle had to come in and reset the stuff so the puzzles would work and our lights would stay on at the same time as one of of us were reading a clue. As a result of the distraction we missed some key stuff that would have helped us solve the puzzle we were on. We did eventually get it but only after we went back and reread and a few of the ones who missed it the first time were able to connect the dots from a previous step. Also took away from the ambiance/mood. The other issues had to do with special effects from puzzles not working/responding and I think it comes from a combo of they’re due to be scrubbed after many many uses and maybe some stuff just needs to be updated/replaced as it’s worn/breaking down. I don’t wanna give spoilers here but happy to share privately so you guys can continue to thrive. Now for our host, Kyle. He’s awesome! He really gets into character and does an excellent job with the immersive acting. You can tell he takes pride in his job and really added a fun element to the game from beginning to end.
Thank you for a fun evening and birthday celebration. We...
Read moreMy friends and I came down to Portland from Seattle to do 3 rooms with Escapism on June 24. We did the Wizards Lair as our second room. Overall this room was different then other escape rooms, but was really disappointed in this room. We heard it was one of the most challenging rooms in OR, as well as one of the best. In the room, there was some fun complex challenges, but one of the main problems was the room wasn’t reset properly. Upon getting to the final puzzle, there were items missing and we spent 4-5 minutes wasting our time looking for items that weren’t in the room. Talking with another friend about that final puzzle, I feel like we really missed out on some amazing things that should have happened. Another issue, was when we asked for hints, the speaker in the room was constantly cutting in and out and was super difficult to hear the responses from the employee. Also, it would sometimes take us asking a few times for a hint, before he responded. Overall Escapism rooms were fun, but was very disappointed in the Wizards Lair, especially when we called ahead to the manager and made plans for 3 rooms in one day, I would have preferred they make sure the employees reset the room properly and didn’t seem like they didn’t know what was going on. I would suggest doing other Escapism rooms before doing the...
Read moreWe had 11 people from our office go to the Magician's Lair. We had too many people, most weren't experienced in escape rooms, and this was supposed to be a particularly difficult one. I appreciate the volume of trouble they went to design this room. It was very cool.
The "apprentice" was so committed to his role that he was nearly useless. My co-workers were eager to start and didn't get that we were supposed to grill him for answers. He didn't push back with something like "are you sure? I have gained a lot of insight working with my master all these years." He just seemed to throw his hands up in the air and let us go in.
In the room we were supposed to interact with something that told us to put it down. Again, it was not clear we were supposed to talk to it and there was no push-back like "it has been a while since I spoke to someone from the outside."
The third strike was there were things that were not supposed to be moved that weren't marked as such. After we moved them there would be no way to solve the room. We moved them early and that made sure the room was unsolvable, meaning we wasted the rest of our time running around like idiots.
To sum up: Amazing room setup. Bad administration...
