A.G. Gaston Motel, Birmingham, AL The motel opened on July 1, 1954, and was built by African American entrepreneur A. G. Gaston (1892–1996) to provide “first‐class” lodging for Black travellers in the segregated South. It had 29 (later 32) guest rooms, air-conditioning, a coffee shop, dining room and entertainment space — marketed as upscale in its era. • Room 30, sometimes called the “War Room,” was where leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy and Fred L. Shuttlesworth met, strategised protests, negotiated with city officials and planned non-violent actions in Birmingham. • On May 10, 1963, a bomb was detonated at the motel (just after the local truce agreement) and damaged the building beneath Room 30. • It appears in the The Negro Motorist’s Green Book (the travel guide for Black travellers) and hosted famous guests (musicians, athletes, civil-rights figures) in its heyday. It symbolised Black entrepreneurship, dignity and hospitality during segregation. #fyp #explorepage✨ #history #birmingham #civilrights

Always be intentional when it comes to support. There was once a time when we as Black Americans had to solely depend on ourselves!! Those were times when we All Loved each other more. Let's take the time daily to draw from the mindset of our ancestors and choose each other!! #blackhistory365 #supportblackownedbusinesses #loveeachother #blackowned #205Life

I enjoyed every minute of my visit at Alicia's Coffee & will definitely go back again! Upon entering, I was greeted with friendly staff who explained & suggested items on the menu. I opted on getting a hazelnut coffee w/ oatmilk & a sausage, egg, & cheese biscuit w/ jelly. Both were delicious, but the coffee was on another level of perfection that I had to get a whole bag to take with me!!! Thank you for serving up greatness with a...

I was on my way to an appointment and walked by. Had not had a chance to get by since the grand opening. Let me tell you, this is a most see, do, and stay! The grounds are manicured. Modern and nostalgic decor. They have a trendy Coffee shoppe and cafe' too! This is a place to learn and enjoy the ambiances. Plenty of parking including handicapped as well. Will definitely be back and check out the rest...
