The "Lyric Theatre" in Birmingham, Alabama.
Lyric Theatre, built in 1914 for Vaudeville, has seen such acts as "The Marx Brothers," "Will Rogers," and "Milton Berle." Milton Berle said it was one of his favorite places to perform.
There was a period when the place just sat empty. It's said that during this period, Mr. Milton Berle himself told the owners that he'd do some free shows if they'd open the place back up. That's the rumor. Still, though, it sat.
The place recently went through an 11 Million Dollar Renovation and was opened back up. It's mainly for performing arts such as ballet, opera, symphony, and other types of music. Tonight, I was taking my Mother to see "Three On A String with Guest Star Sean Dietrich."
We arrived early and found our seats. The Staff and Volunteers were so Friendly and Helpful. The show began at 3 pm sharp, and wow, what a show it was!
Three On A String, combined with Sean Dietrich, was excellent. It felt as though Sean had been a part of the group the whole time instead of being a Guest.
A Christian Oriented Show with "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" mixed in. —They said they got away with singing that song because the devil loses. That is the best way to describe this particular performance.
There were many laughs throughout the show, but a fella couldn't help but tear up when Sean Dietrich sang "Silent Night" in German. He dedicated it to his German Grandparents and also told stories of his Grandparents.
As I said earlier, the show started at 3 pm, and by 5:30-ish, it was over.
"Sean Of The South" has done shows all over America. The same can be said of "Three On A String." So, if you get the chance, try to see their show. You won't be disappointed.
And if you get the chance to see any show at the "Lyric Theatre," take it. Lyric Theatre never...
Read moreBeing from Birmingham and knowing some of the entertainment history gives me a warm feeling and I felt like I was on fire during my recent visit at The Lyric theater. Most don't know that it was considered the alternative to The Alabama Theater for Blacks. It fell deeply into disrepair for some time but has truly returned to its faceted glory. My wife and I attended the Brian Culbertson concert this week and he brought the house daown.....as usual. He and his bands really know how to grab their audiences by their party hand and spin them till they drop from exuberant exhaustion. This was our second Culbertson concert and we thoroughly enjoyed both. I could sit in the venue and admire the architectural restorations for a week and not see them all. My favorite was the late 1800s gear display in the bar area. It's a testament to how far the area has come. Just imagining the sculpture in action is visceral. The bar was easy also. They had 4 attendants serving which made it even better. You didn't have to wait forever for a drink. And security was comfortably tight. Eventhough the type of crowd there would only probably complain about how long the bar line was. The intimate atmosphere is at a maximum at this venue. From the floor to the mezzanine to the balconies. Ot a bad seat in the house. Friendly staff, good drinks, hella entertainment....
Read moreWe managed to secure seats for the opera, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. Initially, I was uncertain about the restricted view warning, especially since it was my first time at this venue, but we had no trouble seeing the stage. In fact, I believe we had the best seats available. The venue itself is beautifully renovated, showcasing intricate details that enhance the experience. The bar featured a special on a local sour canned beer, which was quite delightful, and they offered a variety of snacks like popcorn, cookies, and assorted candies. Additionally, there was a wide selection of beer, wine, and liquor. While nearby parking lots tend to fill up quickly due to other attractions in the area, there is plenty of street parking available just a few blocks away.
We sat in section OB101, Row A, Seats 1-2. This was the first row on the lower opera box seating and it felt like we were sitting...
