Letson Loft Hotel — Attraction in Bisbee

I have never been to Bisbee so we chose this hotel based off reviews. I love historic buildings so when I read this hotel was in the old building in Bisbee I was so happy to find availability. We stayed over only 1 night during the Labor Day weekend, as it was a quick break from “life”! ||First off, I made a mistake when making my online reservation. I got my dates wrong. After I realized the issue, (after the confirmation was emailed out) panic set in. However, the Letson was very nice and changed my date: no funny business with fees or anything. I was sent a new confirmation and there were no additional charges for my mistake. Thank you! ||The hotel is the oldest building, as I said, and you do feel like you stepped back in time. They have kept the character of the architecture yet turned what wasn’t a hotel into a hotel and did not sacrifice amenities for charm or a great bathroom for “historical accuracy!” We stayed in a room that was huge! It is next to the sun room although there isn’t a door from the guest room to the sunroom. The sunroom is a common space but it is lovely. The room had exposed brick, a very comfy king sized bed, skylight windows, a bathroom with fantastic lighting, and just other touches (settee, beautiful desk area, adorable improvised closet) nice sized tv, free WiFi, free parking and wonderful water pressure) that make it fun staying there. The hotel is right in the town so you can easily walk to any restaurant or shop. Parking in Bisbee seems to challenge some but the hotel did have parking in the back so we were fine. The hotel does have steep stairs…and no valet..so be prepared to carry your bags UP. There is not an elevator which is disclosed on their website. Over all this is a quaint hotel with charm and history and all the comfy amenities one needs to be very comfortable. ||There were a few things with our stay that I raised an eyebrow to. These are not dealbreakers and maybe these things seem odd to outsiders that the owners or managers might need feedback on. So here we go….||The doors are locked so you have to be let in unless you are a guest and have your key. You park in the back and can enter from the back and after walking up stairs, there is a door bell to ring. (Now there was a couple that arrived at the same time with their bags and parked next to us and we chatted so they knew we were checking in also. They got upstairs ahead of us and were let in and I am assuming they didn’t have the good graces to say, “ you have another guest coming up.” I say that b/c the rest of what I’ll write makes no sense if they knew we were coming up.) Once you ring that bell you don’t know if it’s been heard. There isn’t a little sign that says, “Ring me, have a seat and soon you will see me! “ or “ring bell and wait please, we may be checking in the impolite AS#$&&&# who couldn’t be bothered to hold the door or tell me you were coming up our steep stairs.” So my husband rang the bell, then rang it again..waiting…then rang it again. Now when the door was opened the woman was a trifle displeased with us and one reason is because the check in desk is not near that door so while she was helping the couple, (described above) she kept hearing that bell! But in our defense…. All we saw was two people go inside yet when we go to walk in the door, we are locked out. So confusion. My suggestion is communication with the guests. An intercom at the door, or even a little sign saying “we will be right there.” Because otherwise how do we know what is going on? You know you will be a few minutes but the poor schlep standing outside just walked up those steep stairs and faces a locked door. ||Ok, check in after that is easy.. we are shown to our room a given the lay of the land as far as where the coffee will be, the ice etc. What I will suggest is when a guest asks for something such as extra pillows, you may want to have extra pillows, or if not then that is fine but it may be a good idea. Just a suggestion. ||The Letson has continental breakfast that is set out, pastry coffee, juice etc., and when we checked in we were shown where it was and told it was single serve and it all sounded great. At about 10:15-10:30 my husband goes to grab coffee as we are waking up and getting ready to check out which is at 11:00am. When he cannot find it he asks and is told, “we stop the coffee at 10 because check out is at 11.” And now he comes in to tell me I will have to be in his existence until he can get some coffee….Luckily there are places within a couple of doors outside of the Letson to grab coffee. My suggestion is maybe let the guest know this when you are showing them around or better yet a little sign in the room. Stopping a self service-single use coffee service an hour before checkout makes no sense to me; and what about the guests who are not checking out? But if that is your policy, fine just a heads up would be great as we try to only chose hotels that offer continental breakfasts. ||Check out is simple, easy and no problem. So except for the few areas I suggest be communicated to make those coming to you to feel welcomed I think the hotel is lovely. We stayed in Suite 7 which is situated at the back of the hotel with windows looking out on Commerce Street. There isn't much in the way of a view, but that's okay! The room itself was SO comfortable, clean and cute. It is very quiet at the back of the hotel and we all slept like babies the three nights we stayed. My husband's parents stayed in a room at the front of the hotel which had a beautiful view of Main Street out of the bay windows. The issue they had was the noise from the street. The traffic noise as well as people in the streets at all hours of the night was bothersome to them, but that's not unexpected when you're staying in a hotel right on Main Street. Their room was also very comfortable. It was fairly cool when we visited with chilly mornings, so having the ability to turn on the heater first thing in the morning really helped make the rooms extra cozy. By afternoon Bisbee would warm up and our rooms would stay nice and cool. The staff were kind and accommodating. As far as the continental breakfast, if you're expecting something similar to a large chain hotel, you will be disappointed. The breakfast consists of coffee, orange juice, yogurt, apples, string cheese, mini muffins and mini breads. It's not a lot, but it was more than enough to get us started for the day. I suprised my husband with a weekend getaway. I had seen the Loft on Arizona Highways and looked it up online. The rooms are each unique, set inside an old brick building. The Loft saved part of the original walls and inside stairs. Bringing in the history into a well upscale designed interior. Small and quaint, the room look over the main street. The staff was helpful, quiet and for the most part we were alone in the loft. Which made it feel more private. Close to everything , restaurants and shops. The prices are higher than the other hotels but the difference in quality is huge. If you are looking for an intimate getaway then the Loft is the place. If you want to be surrounded my many guest and socialize ...this isn't the place. But I like my private intimate room and when I want to socialize all I had to do is walk out the door. The drive to Bisbee has many small historical towns. Making it an adventure getting there. The staff worked with our specific needs, to arrive early. Check out late.
