Unwelcoming and Unprofessional Behavior Defamatory Response by Kevin Bains Below
This is my first Google review, and unfortunately, it’s not a positive one.
I recently visited Boulder Rock Club while exploring local climbing gyms. Upon arrival, I urgently needed to use the restroom. I was almost at the bathroom when a staff member loudly yelled out, asking where I was going, and told me that I needed to inform him before using it, which felt unnecessary given the situation.
A minute later, the general manager, Kevin Bains, approached me in the restroom with more questions, mentioning issues they’ve had with homeless individuals using the facilities. I found this irrelevant and insulting, especially since I don’t remotely look homeless—though, even if I did, I would hope for more respect than Kevin Bains offered.
I shared that I was visiting after witnessing the loss of a friend in a climbing accident and was hoping to find a welcoming community. Instead of offering empathy, Kevin told me this gym would not be a welcoming environment for me and asked me to leave. He also seemed more focused on my choice of words when expressing frustration than addressing the situation itself.
As someone with years of climbing experience and involvement in the community as a respected member, I’ve never encountered such an unwelcoming atmosphere at a gym. If you're looking for a supportive and respectful environment, I’d recommend exploring other options.
Update: Defamatory Response and Request for Transparency
After posting my initial review regarding my unpleasant experience at Boulder Rock Club, I was surprised to see the response from the management, specifically from Kevin Bains, which contains several inaccuracies and misrepresentations of what occurred during my visit. Rather than handling the situation professionally, Kevin’s response paints me as an angry customer who yelled at, threatened, and insulted others—claims that are completely inaccurate.
I came to the gym seeking solace after the loss of a friend, hoping for a welcoming environment, but instead, I have been met with defamation.
In the interest of transparency and fairness, I have formally requested video footage from the lobby to clarify the actual events. This footage will show that the portrayal of my actions in their response is not accurate, and I hope it will lead to a more truthful and professional discussion.
I stand by my original review, which reflects my genuine experience, and I hope the management will reconsider how they handle such situations in the future, addressing concerns with more respect...
Read moreI have been a member and supporting this business for over 15 years. It is extremely difficult to climb in a mask and it makes me dizzy and lightheaded because I have exercise induced asthma. There are plenty of businesses in Boulder and other counties who accept medical conditions for each client case by case and some gyms like Easton have approved mask exemptions from Boulder County for their entire facility.
In restaurants all over the county people are sitting next to each other without masks at all yet in BRC where everyone is 20 plus feet apart with vaulted ceilings and giant exhaust fans running, they take a stand to permanently trespass a long term member when they see the mask pulled down below the nose. The American Disabilities Act protects individuals from this type of discrimination. There were quite a few people in the facility at the time of this incident with there masks down because the effort of climbing hard makes it almost impossible to wear it. However, I was the only one asked to put my mask up, asked to leave and later received the call from the manager that I was trespassed for not keeping my mask up the entire time in the facility.
I did write you an email previously because BRC was requiring employees to wear masks for some time when there was no mandate in place. Several of them told me they did not want to wear them at that time but wanted to keep their jobs and not rock the boat. I sent Kevin the email (Aug 25) on their behalf a full week before the mandate went into effect (sept 1) so your business was not in fact at that time following any rules from the county or state but just your own.
BRC is not fun and light hearted as it used to be. It is very uptight now. A couple of employees have made sarcastic rude remarks to me which I brought to the managers attention to no effect.
I own one of the most successful and fastest growing businesses in Northern Colorado and have been sending clients to BRC for years. I have never received any appreciation or simple thank you so I stopped referring.
I hope BRC in the future is able to rethink their management practices to reflect the needs and wishes of their employees...
