Oversight is needed for Bowling Green Parks and Recreation
Oversight is needed to urge Bowling Green Parks and Recreation to seek consumer input before cutting down more trees and shrubs at Kereiakes Park. In my 2013 Letter to the Editor (Daily News) I described how BGPR had cut down many trees and shrubs along the walking trail in our park. I was told by BGPR that people from the adjoining cemetery had requested that the foliage be removed.
Since my first letter, BGPR has cut down another 1,500 feet of trees and shrubs along the walking trail. With foliage and trees removed, walkers and runners mostly see an expanse of tombstones and plastic flowers on the West side of the park. I think that people prefer to see a forested area, nature, and wildlife. Now wildlife must go elsewhere or seek cover behind tombstones and plastic flowers. Heavy equipment and deforestation cost money and that money should be spent enhancing our park and not damaging it.
BG City Commission approved a $94,010 bid by Brandstetter Carroll of Lexington (Daily News article) to make a master plan for our parks.
