I was looking forward to touring the house of America's most important poet of the 19th century. My husband and I never made it inside the museum yesterday. It is great that the museum does not charge for tours of the house. However, the man living next door to the museum was sitting on his front stoop while publicly intoxicated, yelling at residents down the block, and threatening them with a handgun in his pocket. We did not know if the gentleman would damage our vehicle while we were inside Whitman's house. I did not see anyone else waiting to tour the house.
For the safety of our own lives, we decided to cancel our plans. The state of NewJersey, which owns this historical home, should ensure all.visitors feel safe while parking and touring this major visitor attraction of New Jersey and the city of Camden. Read moreWe made reservations in advance, as indicated on the website, and had no wait at all when we got there. The tour started with a really interesting video about both Walt Whitman and the Camden area during his time - it was really interesting to learn about the area in addition. Then we toured the house and saw some neat pictures that showed some of the same furniture and items being used by Walt Whitman that are sitting in the house now. Our tour guide as incredibly knowledgable and enthusiastic - he gave a great tour and made it really interesting for my niece and nephew that came with us. He mentioned renovations are coming, so we will likely come back and see that sometime in the future. A local person walked by when we were leaving and expressed their appreciation for having this house taken care of and able to be shown to everyone - it was great to hear the pride folks in the neighborhood...

The tour guide meets you out front and provides information on Whitman's history, as well as some history on the surrounding area. You're able to see most rooms in the house, each of which are filled with Whitman's personal belongings, with the tour ending in the yard. The house is beautifully maintained and set up.
