I had a wonderful stay at Century Hotel. I shelled out for the large suite, which was spacious and super quiet. It had views of the tailings of one of the old mines on one side, and then of the bridge and mountains on the other side. It's not a panormic view, but I enjoyed the time I spent looking out the windows. The bathroom is spacious with a separate shower and water closet. The room provided enough space to roam around and to feel even better than at home.
Wi-fi was excellent, not a single glitch.
I do have a couple suggestions. The room could benefit from some light maintenance all the way around, especially the fan in the water closet. The lights in the bathroom could use a dimmer switch, which would significantly improve the midnight potty break experience. Or maybe just a night light.
So, here's the result: Casino + Mid City Grill +++ Servers at Mid City +++ Hotel Staff +++ Room + Wi-fi and TV +++ Location near opera house +++ Midnight potty break --
Bottom line: Loved it, and can't wait till I return.
Old review from a couple years ago: The good news is that the junior suite is spacious and lovely, lots of windows, some panes with the striations of antique glass. Cooling is excellent, bathroom features a separate shower and water closet. Ample storage, and last night I got a great night's sleep, even with sidewalk workers outside my window early this morning.
Mid City Grill is an excellent value. Tasty well-presented food, efficient and friendly staff. I told a server that I'm lactose intolerant, and she informed me she's also lactose intolerant and then took me under her wing. It was so thoughtful, and she made sure I ended up with an enjoyable meal that didn't upset my stomach.
Now the bad news. The wi-fi reminded me of the old dial-up days. It's the worst I've seen in years. If you want to do any streaming, better plan on a hot spot or just do like I do and bring a DVD player. Otherwise, internet has been annoying, hiccupy, and SLOW.
There is some street noise. I called security to quiet down a loud bunch under my window last night, and the situation was taken care of within minutes. The hotel itself is very quiet.
Hotel staff is perfect.
I received no room refreshment the second day. All I needed was the bed made, some coffee, and a couple fresh towels. Oh, well. They missed out on the cash I left them. Century is using Starbucks coffee, but if I don't have it in the morning it doesn't matter.
Casino slots are tight, but not as tight as the big hotels in Black Hawk. Only two of the old-time penny slots, my favorites. Casinos in the area are still using old machines that spew zillions of coins when you cash out. Fortunately, Century is all on paper.
Bottom line: Casino +- Mid City Grill ++ Servers at Mid City +++ Hotel staff +++ No housekeeping service - Room ++ Wi-fi and television --- Location near opera house +++
The positives outnumber the negatives, and I'm already looking forward to my next visit to Central City and the Century Hotel. Just wish they'd get that wi-fi fixed.
P.S. Always leave a couple bucks for housekeeping staff. They...
Read moreHad you asked me a few days ago to rate Century Casino, I would have gladly said definitely 5 stars best casino in Blackhawk hands down. After today, the service and extreme rudeness and disrespect my family and I received is beyond me. 3 hours in with only 2 drinks after a total of $1000 played we get an extremely rude bartender, upset at the fact we asked for a drink first and foremost. I go up to the bar and ask for a Malibu Sunrise because the first time a nicer bartender told me they were out of pineapple for the pineapple Malibu. This one answers me with a rude loud NO! Then goes to state she doesn’t have pineapple so I responded to her I mention it was a sunrise Malibu that’s with orange juice which she should know she’s a bartender. With a big sigh she lets out she starts making it, so then I asked nicely if I could have whipped cream on it so once again she lets out a big sigh and rolls her eyes at me and chuckles. I said there is no reason for you to roll your eyes and be rude to me as I haven’t done anything to cause her to be rude, so then she responds with oh sweetheart you’re the rude one. So apparently I am rude for asking someone to do their job. Regardless I still tipped her a couple dollars. But this is not even the worst part of this night. I go and sit with my daughter and my family, the drink was so washed down I didn’t like the taste so I gave to my daughter to finish it. Mind you she had one drink an hour prior to this. Next thing we know another bartender comes by and states that we can only have 1 drink every 30 minutes and that she was giving us a warning because it is against their policy. Okay never have I had ever heard of such a policy but understood. Next thing you know a security comes by and claims to have been looking at the cameras that we had been sharing drinks all night. My party all look at each other thinking what in the world are these people talking about, we asked to see such video they are talking about just for her to not even be able to respond and go on and say we needed to get out because we had violated the policy that we had just learned about 2 minutes prior. I asked this security guard if this was all because I asked the bartender to not be rude to me and then she stated that the bartender said I was rude first. They refused to listen at this point everything escalated and a party of 8 got kicked out all because a very very rude bartender got upset at the fact that she got called out for being rude. This casino lost a good amount of money today that we would have continued to play had this not happened. I hope the owners are aware of the kind of people they are allowing to put a face to their company making it...
Read moreWe had taken an historical tour of Central City and were hungry after all the walking around. We stopped here and walked through the casino to get to the restaurant... I remarked to my girlfriend that we could stay and play some blackjack after lunch. It's not necessarily the casino's fault, but every customer we saw in the casino section looked fat or old or both, or like they had some sort of medical condition, or maybe like they were on their last dollar... it's not meant to be an indictment, but I felt sorry for them and wished I hadn't had to walk through this particular gauntlet just to get to the restaurant. I just wondered why I didn't see even one young, good-looking, in-shape, well-to-do person here besides ourselves. When we got to the restaurant itself, an old biker guy in full leathers was looking at the sign that proudly advertised prime rib for $6.99 (I think it was $6.99, something like that). My girlfriend said "Look! They have prime rib for only $6.99" and I said "Dear, you're not going to get good prime rib anywhere for only $6.99". The biker dude turned around and started laughing, his toothless grin telling a story of rough days and toothbrushless nights. I asked the hostess "How's the food here?" and she proclaimed "We've got the best prime rib in the house!" I innocently asked "Well, how many other places are selling prime rib in this particular house?" and she blushed and paused and I could see her gears turning before she then said "Oops, good point. I guess I should be saying 'We've got the best prime rib in town!'" I secretly wondered, sadly, whether a local butcher truly didn't have any dry-aged prime-grade prime rib better than the budget-priced prime rib at this fine establishment. She then took us back to a seat and handed us some filthy plastic menus. Food was visibly strewn about the floor, both in and out of our booth, and a table across the room was rife with women coughing and hacking their lungs out. I told my girlfriend "Hey, I don't want to stay here, I'd rather pay more somewhere else and feel like maybe I won't get sick from either the people or the general conditions here". She agreed, and we left. I can't rate or review any of the food, except what I saw stuck to our menu and lying about on the floor. If the restaurant had been closer to the entrance, clean, and not advertising unrealistically cheap food, we'd have probably stayed and gambled a while before...
