Unfortunately, the wonderful student staff and university faculty that work here cannot overcome the terrible reality.
It's not their fault, but the SRC is an unacceptably dilapidated facility with broken equipment that has screws fall out as you use it, out of order equipment that never ever gets replaced, let alone even serviced. It is left only with a sad sheet of printer paper to help it collect dust.
There is not remotely enough equipment for the student population.
It's unacceptable that the flagship university of our state believes that the student rec center for tens of thousands of tuition paying students should be this unacceptable joke.
There are 10 treadmills for students to use upstairs, one of them was replaced with a resistance treadmill, so it's really nine, and it's actually 8 if you consider there is one that has had an out of order sheet upon it for months.
So right, we get eight functioning belt-driven treadmills for the student rec center of tens of thousands of students. Logical. Let's not even get started on the terrible hours, it's just like our libraries. The idea of being open 24 hours is a distant memory of when this university cared to fund its student facilities.
If people touring UNC saw what the students put up with compared to ANY other UNC System school, they'd be taking their prospective tar heel and their college...
Read moreVery disappointing. You'd think an athletically oriented school would have better gyms, but the gyms here are far worse than those at similar "public Ivy" schools like University of Michigan or Minnesota or Wisconsin or Penn State. It's an embarrassment to the school, frankly.
The hours are bad, the staff are unfriendly (although I found them friendlier at the Ram's Head gym), no one will reply to your emails. The equipment is barely sufficient at best, but the spaces are so small and crowded that you might not be able to use what you want anyway.
The monthly fee is only $12.50. The other "public Ivy" schools I mentioned before all charge over $40, and that's likely why their gyms are actually good. UNC needs to increase the fee, use those funds to improve and expand the gyms, and hire some staff who actually give a damn about the gyms and those...
Read moreThis review is a hard truth.
From the staff to the facility there is much to be improved on from such an outstanding university.
From when you first walk in there is a clear lack of professionalism, whether the staff is there to work, socialize, study, or solve puzzles (literally) is unclear. It appears as if the non-student faculty members are setting the student faculty up for failure, allowing for a complete lack of professionalism.
The equipment is overall a great selection, although often the handles for the cables are in disarray and poorly maintained. No enforcement of weight floor dress code, and appears to be a huge liability. While the sanitation wipe bins are nearly always empty.
Really hope the remainder of my time as a student the facility can improve, whether in service, equipment status, or even the air ducts being...
