We had a horrible experience at the Carolina Inn's Crossroads Restaurant yesterday. Before giving the details, let me clearly state we are not ones to easily find serious faults with a restaurant. Anyway, were a party of 10. My spouse and I arrived before the others. The server came and filled all the water glasses. While doing that, the server spilled a good bit of water on the table when filling one of the glasses. She clearly noticed. I assumed when she finished she would come back and cleaned up the spilled water. She didn't, so I had to go over and ask for a towel. Instead, another server said he would come clean it up. The next mishap was my spouse's order. She ordered the fried green tomato sandwich. When it arrived, it appeared fine visually from the top. However when she picked it up it was completely burned on the bottom (both halves). She never sends food back, but did in this case. They did offer to comp her meal, which was nice but the bigger question is whether the chef knew it was burned and purposely placed it burned side down hoping my spouse would not notice, or did the chef not look to see how it was cooked before plating the dish. Neither is a good sign. The last issue was with paying. We waited 15 minutes for our check. Because it took so long, when it did arrive, I went ahead and gave the person a gift card we had and my credit card. I told him we didn't know how much was on the gift card but to apply it, and charge the remaining amount to my credit card. He left and made an odd comment that it would take a while because he had to go to the front desk of the hotel, and couldnt pull up the gift card on the restuarant system. He was gone another 10 minutes and when he finally came back, he hadn't applied any payment; all he did was tell me how much was on the gift card and asked how I wanted to handle the payment. So at this point we had waited 25 minutes and nothing had been processed. After another 10 minutes waiting (presumably he had to go out to hotel front desk) he came back. So total wait time was about 35 minutes to checkout. We won't be back. With that said, the food tasted great and the wait staff were very friendly, knowledgeable about menu, and responsive on...
Read moreI retired after 25 years of teaching and recently started a whole new career later in life. This was supposed to be a special moment for me-my very first conference where I didn’t have to stay in one of those $80-a-night state-rate hotels for school employees. I splurged. I was so excited to stay in a $500-a-night room with in-room dining. I felt like an “old lady” finally treating herself. But within 30 minutes of arriving, my excitement turned into devastating disappointment.||||Getting to the hotel, I had no option other than a taxi. The driver and I were struggling with my bags while the valet staff just stood there watching. No greeting, no offer to help. I was left to juggle everything myself-pushing the door open, dropping my jacket, muttering under my breath. Only then did one valet wander over, simply to hold the door. Not to help with the luggage. Not even to ask if I was okay. I can’t explain how deflating that felt, especially when I had been so thrilled to be here.||||Check-in was fine, but when I walked into my room, my heart sank again. The room was tiny-shockingly small for the price. And then I realized there was no closet. None. Just a little cubby about 2.5 feet tall. I had packed dresses for the week and couldn’t hang up a single one. To make matters worse, every drawer I opened reeked of fish. The smell was so strong I couldn’t bring myself to unpack anything. I just stood there thinking: I waited months for this, and this is what I get?||||The final straw was dinner. I wanted to celebrate my first night with in-room dining, but what I got left me in tears. I paid $70.30 for a meal that came with four small strips of meat-and a plastic fork. That’s it. Four little strips for seventy dollars. I kept staring at the plate, trying not to cry, but I couldn’t help it. Back home in Texas, when you spend $70 on a steak, it looks and tastes like a $70 steak. Here, it felt like a cruel joke.||||I had been looking forward to this trip for so long, imagining it would feel special, memorable, and worth celebrating. Instead, it has been one letdown after another. I’ve only just arrived, and I already...
Read moreExcellent service, sparking clean rooms and facility. Love the charm and nostalgia of the hotel decor and rooms!! Very good location near to dining and shopping as well as UNC campus. We stayed with our two children as we were passing through on our travels. The beds were very comfortable, and we had adequate space in the room. The hotel is located just a few blocks from Franklin Street, which has a variety of restaurants, shops, coffee houses, ice cream shops, banks, and even a Target. We decided to take a stroll to Franklin Street and, while it was a little bit more then a quick walk, it was still doable for a 7 and 8 year old without any fuss. There was also an art gallery within walking distance with free admission. (I believe it was Akland Art Gallery. We did not have time to check it out but it looked like something to check out if you are in the area.)
The hotel has a 24 hour gift shop/pantry which is attended by an employee at all times, a restaurant in hotel, a morning room (with a few couches and a few small tables and chairs to eat at, a TV and a microwave if you need use of one.
The rooms have mini fridges, and coffee makers, but no microwave in room. We did not mind not having a microwave in the room as there was one available in the morning room if needed. Bed's and bedding were clean and comfortable.
There were plenty of cozy sitting areas both inside and outside the hotel. Grounds are well kept. And we noticed a fairly small business center but it was available to guests. Lots of conference and ball rooms available for rental as well.
We travel quite a bit and I have to say that the service, cleanliness, location and quaint decor made for an outstanding stay for a family of four traveling through. It was more then just a room for the night. It was an experience that broke up the monotonous long drives that accompany road trips.
We would...
