I am about to go on a rant praising the entire cast and crew at Theatre Charlotte for the lovely performance of The Wizard of Oz. There was so much talent on the stage last night I don't even know where to start. Immediately I was blown away by Mary Lynn Bain. She mastered the role of The Wicked Witch. Her energy and talent is unmatched. Dorothy/Cameron Vipperman's ease on stage was quite impressive. I was VERY close and was able to see her facial expressions and wow, she killed it. This girl can sing! I would see any musical she graces her presence with. Can we talk about Ashley Benjamin? Wow. She played the Tinman and did an amazing job. I mean how hard is it to stand in those stiff poses for the entire show? She is very talented. Tapping, singing, acting. This girl is going places. Scarecrow, oh Devon Ovall was made for this role, or he's just that good at going into character. Flailing and prancing in his straw body. I was convinced he was made of straw. Again, a talented singer and dancer. His facial expressions had me laughing for the duration of the play. He's a true joy to watch. Kyle Britt played our beloved Cowardly Lion. He did an amazing job and I felt like a kid again singing (under my breath) along with him. I found myself wondering how they found such a great person for this role. He was absolutely hilarious. I loved the refreshing role of Oz. D. Lavergne Woods is so comfortable on stage I feel like I know her now. Her vibe is fantastic. I hope to see more of her on the Theatre Charlotte stage. Now the munchkins, these kids were wonderful. I literally teared up watching them because they brought so much joy to the stage. This was absolutely delightful. Kudos and thanks to the entire creative team. This was masterpiece. Carry on and see...
Read moreMy first visit to Theatre Charlotte. My wife and I attended opening night of their adaptation of L Frank Baum's ' The Wizard of Oz '. Venue was small but cozy. Seats maybe 300 or so patrons. Somewhat cramped seating... ( shoulder to shoulder). This particular evening the air conditioning seemed to be struggling. Quite warm. As far as the performance , I must say, hats off to Dorothy, Wicked witch of the West, Auntie Em and Cowardly lion. They carried the show!. Unfortunately some liberties were taken with other characters which didn't quite impress. Now let's talk about the ' Jitterbug' routine that was injected into the second act. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? Some effeminate guy in a skin tight leotard prancing and gyrating across the stage for several minutes. I'm guessing to appease a certain segment of the audience or further some liberal agenda? Can someone explain that to me? Anyway, again..Dorothy, Wicked witch, Auntie Em, cowardly...
Read moreFantastic! Friendly, talkative staff! Clean venue. Drinks and snacks on site. A cozy theater. We saw "The Play That Goes Wrong". It was great! Very funny, entertaining and family fun. We'd go back. We drove from Hickory to Charlotte for the show. We took in another show at the Belk Theater on Sunday and while Belk is a big, fancy Theater and we like going there, Theater Charlotte has a warm inviting feeling. The true, small stage experience. We have a local theater in Hickory (2 in relatively close proximity) and there's something about the smaller, intimate stage that's magic to me. Theater Charlotte captures that feeling and experience in my mind. We wouldn't hesitate to buy tickets and go again, even in the middle of the week. We enjoyed it and look forward to our next...
