In the midst of this pandemic, most of us are hard pressed to find much of anything to do. Indeed, while it is important for us to stay inside of our own homes as much as possible, sometimes we need some fresh air and a stroll around our local neighborhoods to clear the mind and calm anxieties.
The Glessner House Museum is a known entity to my boyfriend and I. We have visited on several occasions and it truly is a magnificent piece of architecture and interior design that may have even inspired the well renown architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The tour is quite lengthy and very informative and I cannot recommend it enough to everyone once these unfortunate times come to a close.
However, as the museum is closed, the staff have made a wonderful change. They have opened the previously "tour only" courtyard in the back of the house and are allowing guests to see the house through the windows. They have also placed trivia questions in some of the upper windows to educate visitors.
During these times of hardship it is important to remember that all of our neighbors, both families and businesses, are being negatively affected one way or another. If you do decide to visit the Glessner House during this time of lockdown, be sure to wear a face covering, maintain social distance, and consider donating some money, if possible, to a wonderful museum of Chicago's history.
P.S. I will be revisiting this review in the future to reflect on the Glessner House during times of normalcy and how you can spend a very pleasant afternoon in the...
Read moreIncredible architectural landmark with a dedicated staff/volunteer base. I took the tour last year and ended up being the only person who had signed up for the time slot. This meant I got a brilliant, private tour of the home and my guide dived into some incredible details about the space, and the Glessner's themselves. After leaving, I am pretty much obsessed with Frances Glessner and hope I do half as many cool things in my lifetime. Creating a book/speaking club for the other Millionaire's Row wives, silversmithing, making miniatures, knitting, beekeeping, forensics...seems like there was nothing she wasn't interested in doing!
My guide was incredibly well-informed and engaging. Plus, after the tour, we kept chatting and he gave some other local landmarks he recommended for their architectural value. This place is a true hidden gem; check it out if you want to do something new to...
Read morePlease don't bring your children to the museum if they are under 10 years old. The woman at reception would give you horrible experience that you have never had if you bring your kindergarten children. We visited the museum on 09/22/18. Since we came in, this woman had been continuously spying on us with bad manners. She shouted sensitively 'No touching' before we got close to the museum model in the tour waiting room and so on and so forth. Even other visitors who are in the waiting room shook their heads with surprise and incomprehension. We have visited more than 50 museums all over the world, and this is the first time we met such an unprofessional staff. We suggest that Glessner House Museum makes a sign 'No kids' or you should treat all the visitors friendly. Although other staffs are nice, we have to...
