Have eaten here with friends before, so I decided to order for delivery...pandemic and all.
I ordered:
6 Delaware Bay (NJ), 6 Wellfleet Oysters (MA), 1 Cajun Seafood Boil, and 1 order of the Prime King Crab Legs. I mention this first because I'm doing this review in the context of spending $200 plus for delivery. Ok so that's that.
It's so hard to find QUALITY oysters in Chicago...I regularly buy oysters and I'm also regularly disappointed. Usually from a fresh market or grocery store.
I recommend Chicago Oyster House off that alone...get as many as you can eat/afford! These babies are gooooooood! If you eat them regularly you'll be able to taste the difference..briny salty delicious seawater...Mmmmmm
They had to be creative with the boil bag, it came in a plastic container...all the items were present, but the sauce was on the side in 2-3 ounce solo cups...same with the butter but no complaint there. The snow crab was very tasty. So were the mussels and clams. The shrimp is acceptable considering the other premium options on the menu. The potatoes and corn and sausage? Very, very meh. It's like at least sprinkle some salt and pepper guys..some garlic or something. Veggies were bland. Sausage was sausage, it's hard to mess it up.
My only complaint here the whole seafood boil fit in the plastic container. The snow crab, the mussels, the clams, the shrimp, the corn, the potatoes, the sausage and the sauce. One container?? Plastic?? You sure it's all there?? Really?? You didn't compromise quality and quantity because it's for delivery did you? It kinda feels like it.
The 12 oysters came in two plastic containers with the ice, in the seafood boil bags with the oysters on top.....are ya'll being serious over there? So you give me that but you couldn't bag up the seafood with the sauce???You worried about spilling it? Then double bag it! Ok, so the kitchen or the managers don't see an issue? Fine, moving on.....
You know for $78 I had low expectations for the King Crab Legs...many restaurants don't get it right....Chicago Oyster House may not have it exactly right also, but they're trying. At least it seems like they're trying. What I mean is I received 2-3 of the biggest King Crab legs I have ever seen delivered from a restaurant, including the claw and they were split. Not sure what makes them "Prime" though. Maybe its how sweet they are, and tender and just....they almost melt. Average price for King Crab is what? At least $50/lb? So the price isn't too bad, but it's one of those things where it's like "ok show me why YOUR king crab legs should be this price"..and they kinda proved that to me. Wish there was at least another half leg included, but what I did get..it was worth it. Could've been better, but compared to other restaurants in Chicago, Chicago Oyster House is a winner. Pricey but theres quality...damn those...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThey get ZERO stars from me if that was an option. I attempted to go here for dinner tonight. We're in town for a PartyLite conference. We looked up the restaurant and called to see what time they closed. We were told 10:00 p.m. So we called an Uber. We arrived at 9:05 p.m. We follow the signs that direct us to the door. It won't open. We asked the guard at the next locked door (He at least opened it and talked to us), "How to get in the restaurant". He sent us pack to the door I just tried. I try again it doesn't open. There are 3 waiters and 8 people sitting at various tables eating. No waiter acknowledges us trying to open the door. So we go to the front door, despite the sign on the corner that directs you to the door we've tried twice. The front door is locked as well. My friends calls the restaurant as I go back to the other door for a third time. We watch the waiter answer the phone as he as the rest the rest of the customers watch us through the full glass windows. He tells us on the phone that they are closed. Its 9:08 p.m. !! We tell him that we called and were told 10:00, The internet says 10:00 and the sign on the door says 10:00. We hang up and walk away headed back to our hotel and the manager calls us back arguing with my friend saying that the door wasnt locked and they were open. We recant the above and she tells us to walk back, (though there is no way we're eating there). My friend is angry so I go I to talk. They open the door and tell me that it was open all along and it was just hard to open. š I asked why he didn't come open it the other 3 times I was at the door and why then did he tell us on the phone that they were closed. The female manager who told us to come back went In the back when she saw me walk up. So I just left. The manager called again as we walked back to our hotel, we finally just quit answering the phone. The saddest part is I was really looking forward to this restaurant. The food looks amazing and all the reviews were good. But unfortunately this was a case of lazy employees closing up early. If only they would have only said that when we walked up...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAt first, my wife and I were hesitant about dining at Chicago Oyster House Prime Seafood & Steaks. Why? Because we aren't into oysters or sushi or raw fish of any kind, which is the restaurant's specialty. But the website indicated we might be overlooking a good thing. So we made a reservation. And we're glad we did. Located at 1933 South Indiana Avenue in Chicago's McCormick Square, in the South Loop, next to the McCormick Convention Center, it has been specializing in raw fish, oysters, sushi, sashimi and other seafood since 2013. It has earned a reputation for "best grilled oysters in Chicago" and "one of the top 21 oyster houses in the United States" while serving customers in a bright and airy space with a modern flair. The oyster bar showcases more than 60 oyster selections from the East and West coasts. And if you are very thirsty, you can purchase a red wine by the bottle, Meritage, 1/6 Opus One, from Napa, California, for $595. We aren't wine drinkers, either. But there were plenty of tasty options to satisfy our tastebuds--and in our price range, too. We started with a plate of jumbo chilled shrimp, two bowls of New England clam chowder with fresh clams, potato, onion, carrots and celery and Caesar salad with romaine, croutons and parmesan cheese. For an entree, my wife chose grilled Scottish salmon topped with mint and basil sauce with steamed white rice and sauteed broccoli with garlic. I opted for a 10-ounce center cut filet with Wasabi mashed potatoes and sauteed baby spinach with garlic. For dessert, we shared a large slice of key lime pie and white chocolate blueberry cobbler. Chicago Oyster House is open from 5 to 9 Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 5 to 10 on Friday and Saturday. Next time, I might be encouraged to discover if southern fried oysters are as good...
