Escape City Buffalo — Attraction in City of Tonawanda

I have very mixed feelings about this place. Atmosphere: 5 stars. Game play: 1 star.

My partner called it the most expensive terrible escape room he's ever been to. For the positive first, it is far and away the biggest and most impressive production value of any place we have been, bar none. It was completely insane. If you want just a completely wild experience and don't care that much about the games, 100% recommend. The downside was pretty much everything else. The dark rooms are really dark, even when you turn the lights on. Which when a lot of the puzzles are observational, is just completely mean. And the puzzles are really obscure and subtle. They leaned so far into the production value, that they wouldn't make ANY compromises to make the games playable. The hints were next level expert and the only reason they have as high of an escape rate as they do is because they allow unlimited hints. You NEED a big group for this. And that upset me because we asked if we could do it with 2 and they lied to our faces and said it was possible. And yes, the website requires you buy 4 tickets for any game, but a lot of places have done that even if you can do the room with less, because of covid so that it's worth it to run a private room. Most places, that's about money. This place, you really, really cannot do the rooms with less than 4.

So, if you've never done an escape room, and you just want an off the wall experience, highly recommend. If you've done 100+ escape rooms and want a GIANT challenge. Go for it. If you really like escape rooms for the puzzles and games, skip it. The puzzles are hard, but they are not clever or...

Devin and Max were the perfect host for our adventure in the Hangover room at Escape City Buffalo. Our small birthday girl’s group had an absolute blast! This escape room offers a unique and immersive theme inspired by the popular movie franchise. From running water, to mood music, to hidden doors and barrels, from the moment I stepped into the "Over the Falls" room at Escape City I felt that I really was a part of the crew racing to get out the ship before we went "over the falls." Me and my friends have done quite a few local escape rooms many of which I enjoyed, but I really felt like Escape City did the best job of immersing patrons so that they feel like they are part of the story for the entire experience. We made it out with just 6 seconds to spare which shows how tough it was, our group of 4 is currently undefeated and while we have only set a record at the Erie County Fair, we usually don't cut it that close. I enjoyed the challenge of the rooms and the way everything pieced together, although I would have been disappointed if we didn't get out I still would have enjoyed the experience, our host did a good job of giving us some hints while also allowing us to discover things for ourselves. He was friendly and easy to talk to, he did a great job of introducing us to our story and helping us along the way. I have heard great things about the "body collectors" room, and their coming soon "hangover" room sounds pretty crazy, so I am sure we will be back sometime soon, and I encourage everyone and anyone to go try out one of their rooms at Escape City.
