New Day Children's Theatre — Attraction in Collierville

New Day NOT Children’s Theatre (NDnCT) needs to change their name. They have lost their roots as a small community children’s theatre where young kids can learn the arts and perform in plays. They put on amazing shows, but they are no longer allowing the younger kids play key roles as they used to. The shows are now full of college students who grew up with New Day instead of bringing in new generations of children for the lead roles. They don’t even let the younger kids be understudies. When I complained about this after seeing Les Miserable (the college students were amazing), I was told that the summer children’s camps are where the young children get the chance to play the lead roles. But that is not the case. I watched Shrek last week and the lead was played by the Theatre President’s High School son. He was great, but the theatre was packed full of parents and grandparents of young camp attendees wanting to see their kids perform, not the son of the lady we paid all our camp fees to. I don’t understand why a high schooler wouldn’t be assisting the kids as a camp counselor or something and instead taking the lead role of Shrek himself. And ironically, it was a younger kid playing Donkey who stole the show! Either rebrand yourself as a Family Community Theater for actors/actresses of all ages (but isn’t that what The Harrell Theatre is?) or go back to your roots and be the children’s theater...

My oldest has done New Day shows for the past couple of years, just in ensemble roles but she has LOVED it. The community, and the opportunity to learn and grow in such a supportive environment, is priceless. The quality of the shows is amazing as well. Almost shockingly so.

I had kids in almost every single camp they produced this summer, and they all had a fabulous experience and loved being a part of it, no matter the role. Camps are amazing because no kid over 14 is in camp, so the younger kids that don't get to have big parts in the regular shows really get to shine.
