I’ve been visiting balanced rock almost 50 years, it and the entire Garden on the Gods is a wonderful place. I do have one major complaint about this park and all parks in Colorado Springs. Cannot visit the parks at night! Before I moved here 10 years ago and 40 years before that visiting here we would arrive in Denver (back then) and drive to either Garden of the Gods or Palmer Park Bluffs and watch the beautiful sparkly lights of the city before heading to our family homes, you cannot do that anymore, anywhere (legally). So much for public land, it’s BS, it’s government land! This government thinks everybody should be home and in bed by 9 PM, who do they think they are? It’s all lies they blame it on pot and the homeless, sure there are challenges but not the problems they report, such a scam and saying something about it... retaliation is what they will do. I don’t care anymore about that I don’t own any homes here anymore this town...

It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971. It is, after all, inevitable that the 290-million-year-old rock will fall. Too many factors are working against it. Maybe it will it be dislodged by erosion. Or wind. Perhaps it will succumb to Colorado’s notorious freeze-thaw cycles. Or even an earthquake. In 1936, an anonymous cousin of the Balanced Rock stood on a cliff about a half-mile to the south along the road to Manitou. The Garden of the Gods red rock formations were created during a geological upheaval along a natural fault line millions of years ago. Archaeological evidence shows that prehistoric people visited Garden of the Gods about 1330 BC. At about 250 BC Native American people camped...
Read moreI love bringing my out-of-towners to Garden of the Gods. It’s always beautiful (even in winter)and accommodates all levels of physical capabilities. Go to the welcoming center! They will be happy to tell you what the park is all about. It’s mind blowing! 3 suggestions: 1- Visit the paved garden. It’s perfect for those who want to experience nature but may have difficulties with being able to hike or if you have little ones, strollers or wheelchairs. 2- Go off the paved path and up above the main road. You will have a great view of the garden and have a nice trail to hike on. This trail is perfect for the person who is new to the elevation but would like something more challenging then the paved sidewalks of the garden. (Kids can rock this out too) 3- Get your tourist picture at the balancing rock. Pull in, snap a quick shot or climb up a bit to the dirt road and explore...
