So... I may be biased because I've worked here for two summers now. This is a wonderful local museum! Everyone here is passionate about the Icebreaker Mackinaw and her history. The museum is a non-profit just trying to keep a piece of Michigan history alive. The gift shop is super cute and the prices are fair especially for a tourist town like Mackinaw. Free admission to former and currently serving coast guard and a discount for other actively serving military and veterans. I will warn that there is minimal to no handicap accessibility. The vessel is a decommissioned coast-guard vessel kept almost completely as she was when in service, and as an armed-services vessel she was not made with accessibility in mind. The person in the engine room was super informative and knew so much about how the ship operated, while also making out easy to understand for those who aren't familiar with engines. They knew fun facts that we found interesting!

Just walk past the boat repair shop, up the road past the sail boats. The fella that welcomes you aboard is very friendly and welcoming. Oh yeah, you need to have a little agility to navigate the steel ladder/steps in between ship decks. If your very obese, you might want to pass. The staff is very knowledgeable, the young fella in the engine room is full of interesting info on the diesel power plants and how the ice breaker functions. Kids will have a blast climbing up and down the deck ladders. I'm in my 50's and...
