More Whop-Whop Than Danger Zone
Showed up expecting Top Gun vibes—jets tearing down the runway, sonic booms, aviators slow-walking into the sunset. What I got instead? Helicopters. So many helicopters. It’s less “Danger Zone” and more “Whop-whop-whop until your teeth rattle.”
One guy swears it’s still the best thing going—“Nothing like watching a Seahawk lift off while the bay glitters at sunrise. Makes the traffic worth it.” He probably thinks the chow’s edible too.
Another voice chimes in: “Traffic? Don’t even start. I spent more time in line at the gate than it would’ve taken to fly to Miramar. Parking’s a dogfight, and the only thing scarier than the landing pattern is the mystery meat at the galley. I’ll pass.”
Then there’s the cool, smug type: “You two just don’t get it. Jets, helos—it doesn’t matter. This is the heart of naval aviation. Views are unbeatable, aircrews still look sharp, and the sound of rotors is still the sound of freedom. Four stars. Docked one star for the chow.”
Pros: world-class waterfront views, constant aviation action (even if it’s mostly helos now), bragging rights. Cons: gate traffic that feels like a deployment, parking purgatory, and a galley menu straight out of a survival school scenario.
