Understaffed and needs a better day manager.
I live in Coronado. My family and I have come here regularly for birthdays, anniversaries and sometimes just for takeout but today was a major disappointment.
My sister was in from New York and we decided to celebrate our dad's 99th birthday. We had to wait for over 50 minutes to get our food - two simple bento boxes for lunch.
The waiter told us that we would soon have our order. Then we were told that there were 16 tickets for take-out ahead of us. Finally, we received our food nearly an hour after ordering.
I have really liked this place in the past - we have lots of pleasant memories here. But today gave me the impression that they really didn't care about us.
Our waiter said that he spoke to the manager about the delay in hopes that there might be an adjustment to our bill (or perhaps an appetizer or dessert for the inconvenience). However, he returned to say that because we had ordered a lunch special, there was nothing that the manager was willing to do.
After asking for the manager, she came out stating that this was the first she had heard about our having to wait so long. She was somewhere between apathetic and having that deer-in-the-headlights look. No apologies. No concessions. And seemingly no interest in ever having a local resident return.
This establishment needs a better day manager and more than a single server at lunch. Understaffing and bad management cannot save the reputation of a restaurant once word gets out in our neighborhood.
Here's hoping that Saiko Sushi will address the staff deficiencies in the future. Because I'm not certain that we will be coming back...
Read moreIncredibly fresh and delicious sushi! My gf raved about this place and after dining here, I concur! We stopped by for lunch on a Wednesday and were able to snag a table outside to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. They open at 11:30 and by 12:00 all outdoor tables were taken. We started with arnold palmers that were a little bitter, but the fresh cucumber water definitely made up for the lackluster taste. For apps, we had the Saiko edamame that was extremely delicious! If you like spice and fried garlic, you will be obsessed. We also had the karaage steamed bun that was delish, but I was disappointed that the karaage was only available in a bun as it is normally sold as it without the bun. Only one comes per order so for the amount of food we ordered, splitting one was perfect. Our mains consisted of the crown and ace roll. Both were fab, but the crown roll was the definite winner. The next time I visit, nigiri/sashimi are in my future. I ordered the blood orange chicken to go and OMG, I am not a huge fan of orange chicken to begin with, but if they all tasted like Saiko's, I would be in heaven. Jennifer R. was our waitress and she was very sweet. Thank you for recommending the ace roll as well as the blood...
Read moreMy husband and I went in today to celebrate our anniversary & the restaurant did not disappoint! The food was superb! The service was amazing! Location was spectacular! (View of downtown San Diego) As to be expected, with restaurants open at limited capacity, there was a bit of a wait. But the service and food were worth the wait! We ordered the fried calamari, Ace roll, Saiko Roll, Tuna Flight and Sashimi special. 10/10 recommend every single one of the items! The sashimi special was truly one of the best fish I’ve ever had! As for the staff, the Hostess Karla was so professional and friendly! Having a person that nice be the face of the restaurant is a plus! Matt was our server and he brought an energy to our experience that was incomparable! Jeff was also friendly! Dishes were picked up at the perfect time. Did not get the names of the kitchen staff, but they put out some of the best food I’ve ever had! Cherry on top of the dining experience was the vanilla cheesecake with mixed berry purée! (See below) Will be...
