This review is admittedly bipolar. We came here for two experiences, splatter paint and VR. First, we did splatter paint, which was amazing. The guide was very accommodating. We had called ahead to ask about being a half hour late, and he said it would be no problem (the place was empty when we were there on a random weeknight). He took the time to patiently explain and show us everything, and we had a great time throwing paint around and creating chaotic art. Then we decided to do VR, which was a complete disaster. The guide gave a disclaimed that these games were a new addition to this place, and there was a very small chance of hiccups. Well, that turned out to be a huge misrepresentation of the state these games were in. We tried 5 or 6 different games, between us, and each of them had a bug that wasted a lot of time getting around or just prevented us from proceeding with the game. The guide was once again very patient and tried very hard to help us through the difficulties we were having. However, given that he hadn't played them himself and had no more experience with them (or with the whole OS, it seems) than we did, he wasn't able to get very far. One of us is an experienced gamer, and he was getting nowhere either. Additionally, I had done VR elsewhere about 3 years ago, which went smoothly and was very enjoyable. The VR experience at the HoI was clearly not ready to be offered to the public, especially at a hefty price of $35 per person. We grew frustrated and quit halfway through, asking if we could get a voucher to come back when they were actually ready to sell this experience. The guide promised to talk to the owner and be in touch within a week, but that did not happen. In conclusion, the splatter room was fantastic, and we highly recommend it. For the VR, try it at your own risk. This was a month ago, so they might have gotten their act together. However, it is not reassuring that if anything goes wrong, they will make zero effort to reimburse you or offer another experience as...
Read moreReview updated! So we were pretty frustrated by the clues, that is, the overabundance of them. We were a group of 5 and we received 3 clues - but I don't know why we received them. We had plenty of time left - we finished with almost 30 minutes on the clock. It would have been nice to struggle for a second instead of getting the answer almost immediately. Also, our room was a one room-room, mostly padlocks. Some cool features But again, frustrated by the game master. Felt like he had other stuff to do and was trying to rush us out. Wouldnt return, there are too many better games and hosts out there
Update: The owner of Room 5280 contacted us regarding our experience as detailed above. He assured us that the experience we had should be atypical, and that the employee was still new. He offered to let us try a different room, but unfortunately we had to decline as we do not live in the Denver area. To this - I have 2 thoughts. First, I really appreciated the owner reaching out and making the situation right with us. However, we still had 2 members of our party that are now hesitant to do another room in future because of this experience, even though the owner tried to improve things retroactively.. To this point, I hope the owner(s) will re-evaluate their on-boarding process and require new hosts to shadow more experienced ones longer I stand by my 3 star review. Outside of the host experience, the fact that the room was only one room is disappointing, especially as opening a second room is pretty standard. The clues gave too much away; they didnt help direct you to the answer, it felt like they gave you the answer. I should note, that we played The Experiment. Other rooms may be different, I can only speak to the one we played. I will also say that there were some pretty unique puzzles that I haven't seen before, and we've done over 20 rooms around the world.
I'd recommend this place for new players, but with...
Read moreAs a group that has done 50+ escape rooms we felt these rooms were fairly poorly designed, the staff was lazy, and some of the important props were broken. Escape rooms arent particularly cheap and this room feels like they just don’t care how people feel going through the rooms. Very little story and poor management of the rooms: We did the weird heritage and the carnival rooms - so here are some specific reviews. In weird heritage there were decent clues to follow, but the room was reset incorrectly. There was a clue that was in the wrong place that made the room impossible to solve without the hint to get into one of the locks. The person running the room didn’t really care that it had been reset incorrectly and shrugged it off. The black light flashlight was also low on batteries and only intermittently worked…which made the room much harder to get through. This felt like a super lazy effort in a room that was otherwise fairly decent. In the carnival room you start handcuffed, but there isn’t a puzzle to figure out how to get out, it’s just super straight forward and missed opportunity. From there one of the main props were broken and the person just relayed the clue over the radio, but never repeated it for us. Just seems like they should fix the clue so it actually worked. Additionally, the person running the room just randomly told us how to solve certain puzzles, they didnt give us clues, and instead just gave us the answer without us asking for it. Super frustrating. I wouldn’t recommend this escape room, there are better ones around town that seem to care more about their customer experience and how the...
