April 2024 Once again things have changed. We were given an 8th floor inside room with no view. The 2 nights we stayed we were woken up by VERY LOUD drilling and pounding…some kind of construction work AT 7:00 AM! Even with the TV on volume 50 we still couldn’t hear it above the noise. UNBELIEVABLE!! We were on the 8th floor and construction was on the 9th floor. The grate was open (couldn’t close) on the air filter and it was disgusting. The light in the bathroom did not work. They have also removed all of the safes from the rooms. This will be our last time we will stay here. We are elite members of Marriott and this place is a disgrace. Spending almost $400 a night on a room right below a construction sight should be illegal! Even after checkout the workers at entrance/exit made it dangerous to leave! What a terrible way to start your day! May 2023 review We stayed for 3 nights and were treated to an upgraded room. A corner king on the 9th floor. The lighting is still weirdly setup in this room too but the view was wonderful. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful AND we were advised at checkin about maid service. I have adjusted my rating from 2 to 4 stars. Get a coffee shop and a good restaurant in those empty areas in lobby and I’ll give 5 stars 😊 2018- We spent 2 nights in 2018 in this beautiful old building and were pleasantly surprised at all of the modern updates in our room. The valet parking was appreciated after our long drive and the staff was pleasant and welcoming. We were able to walk to Comerica Park within 5 minutes. It is quite expensive but we were happy to be staying within walking distance of everywhere we wanted to go. Sept 2022 Review This was our 3rd stay here and things have changed! Our room was horrible - on the inside with only a view of the building - couldn’t even see the sky! The lighting is confusing and haphazard - the bathroom light switch is by the front door and the bedroom area has no overhead lights and very dim light over bed. We had no housekeeping service AT ALL over the three nights we stayed and when we checked out and complained they told us we needed to request it - which we were NEVER told! There is no restaurant or even a Starbucks there anymore; only a bar. The “free” water in our room had already been opened and so had the body lotion. There were 5 tissues shoved in the tissue box of varying colors. The front desk staff varied from very friendly to kinda rude. We are Marriott Elite members and are so dissatisfied and disappointed with how bad the room they gave us was. Probably will NOT stay here again

The hotel was beautiful, it looks just like the photos. The rooms are well designed and clearly well kept. You can't ask for a more centrally located hotel. And the lobby bar was really nice. My low service rating does not apply to the bartenders who were friendly and made great cocktails. However the overall service and attention to detail lacked. It's clear that this hotel is trying to fool you into thinking this is a luxury experience based on aesthetics alone and doesn't follow through. Notably there is no door man but there is valet. So hotel employees stand there and watch as you struggle to get your baggage through the door but don't offer to help. It's frustrating. Either decide that it's a full service curb to room experience or it's not. But it's distasteful to make a cash grab at valet without other luxury level services you expect upon arrival. Our reservation was for two adults but there was only one robe. The soap bottles were broken off the wall. And our room phone did not work. Minor details but still. Most egregiously though, we were told at the desk that they offer room service. Perfect we thought, we would have breakfast in bed. Wrong. They offer "in room dining" a very intentional distinction because no service is offered at all. Our food arrived at our door 30 minutes after our call in a plastic bag boxed up in to-go boxes with plastic cutlery. No cart, not even a tray, certainly not a breakfast tray. I'm not sure how they expected me to eat my food, since there is no table. I guess from a floppy to go box in bed, but that is messy and depressing. So I called the front desk and told them I had no table to eat at and no plates to transfer my boxed food to and they responded as if I was crazy for wanting to eat like a civilized person with a real fork and a plate. No table or tray was procured but two plates (too small for our meals) and silverware were provided about 20 minutes after our food. I struggled to cut my now damp from steam toast on the bed and got egg yolk on the sheets. Not an experience I would recommend. But if you like eating from boxes where you sleep, I suggest door dashing whatever you want. We stayed for one night and that was certainly sufficient. I will not be back.

The Good: Location was great ; sports stadiums, shopping, restaurants, and bars, etc within walking distance. The bldg. historic & has a Detroit people Mover station. Rooms had modern decor but reminded me of a Hostel/dorm-like feel. The Valet staff were the stars &worked very hard to minimize your wait and was pleasantly surprised to find they were still open after returning from the casino at 3 am.There is bar & "convenient store" with a microwave available for use. The Bad: Stay started off rocky due to staff nit wanting to allow me & my children to check in since only my husband's name was on the resrvation even though the military ID I provided indicated I was his spouse & the correct # of people was reflected on resv (Booked using Bonvoy app which doesn't have an option to add names on reservation After a long flight we had to wait for front desk to check in other customers before accepting my husband's call (he did not travel with us) affirming that I was his spouse &authorized to check in. I was made to sign a contract stating no outside guests ,no smoking, no parties, no loud music. Then proceeded to be placed on a floor with loud bass filled music coming from the next room and across the hall a couple decided it would be ok to leave their baby in the room while they went to the bar (I had to alert the front desk to the baby the fact the baby had been screaming for over an hour) Then early in the am guests were smoking weed in front of the entrance to the hotel. -no coffee machine or dresser in room. -beds were not comfortable ‐ Room had weird layout which made for uneven heating/cooling of room -Atrium view is not worth extra money since the atrium looked like it was I need of attention. -Also overheard that they did not have the reservation of a guest that was booked via a 3rd party app & the guests had the paperwork to prove the reserved &had prepaid.the front staff showed no sympathy & only offered to book the guest into a room thereby making them have to double pay. We would stay again just based on the location but I would warn others that the $280±/night price tag is mainly for convenience of location & not much else.

Beautifully restored art deco (?) hotel in downtown Detroit. Great location near all 3 sports stadiums, bars/restaurants, and Campus Martius is just down Woodward. I lived in this neighborhood from 2013-2015 and things have really improved since the , including the renovation and opening of the Hotel Whitney, which used to be the David Whitney building back in the day. The building itself is gorgeous with a beautiful dark wood lobby and bar and a high-ceiling open area in the middle (Xmas tree in pics). The building is right on Woodward and connected to the People Mover if you want a quick circular tour of downtown Detroit. (Not the most useful of public transportation systems in the country, but it's rarely crowded and I have a soft spot for it.) The rooms themselves are very nice and spacious, well-appointed, and understated. Beds were great and we all slept well. Most of the rooms face inwards to a circular courtyard so close your shades if you don't want people to see you walking around your room! The service was wonderful and professional. It was Xmas time so there were a lot of people in town, including the hotel and lounge area, but the customer service was still excellent. There is also a nice-looking restaurant connected to the lobby area that was full of people before the Red Wings game that night. We didn't eat there but the menu looked solid. From the David Whitney Hotel's (keep in mind there is another establishment in town called the Whitney, a separate mid-town fine-dining restaurant, which I also highly recommend) location, it's super easy to get everywhere cool in town, from all 3 stadiums to Greektown to Campus Martius straight down Woodward. Very safe area and definitely more to do now than when I lived there. Approximately a 3-minute Uber West to MGM casino if you want to gamble as well. All in all, we love this classy hotel in the heart of the D and are planning on going back every Xmas from now on. Definitely highly recommend and I think you'll like it if you give it a chance.

This is very likely my top hotel for a nice staycation in the city. Perfect walking distance to The Fox Theater. The room was just like being at home with absolutely everything needed… including a washer/dryer. The bed was extremely comfortable. The only problem is parking. Valet is $48.

Gorgeous hotel with a beautiful skylight. My room was on the 4th floor looking out at Grand circus park. There were some complementary postcards that I was able to send off to my family from the historic mailbox in the lobby. Location was close to tons of restaurants, businesses and shopping. Easily walkable. The Detroit people mover elevated train was free to ride and gave a fun tour of downtown Detroit. Great trip. Would love to come back.
