After reading an online article that named Duck as a great place for stargazing on the OBX, we ventured over there after dinner (from Nags Head). It's about a 30 minute drive but well worth it! Although we visited at night when nothing was open, we were able to walk along the waterfront docks which were lovely! While searching for a place to let our kids use the restroom we encountered the nicest, most friendly and genuine police officer I've ever met. His name was Officer Knight, and he deserves every praise we can give him! As teens, I think my girls are apprehensive of cops because you only ever hear of ones who catch you doing something you shouldn't be doing lol. But Officer Knight was a gem and showed my girls a great example of a true law enforcement officer - someone who is there to HELP, and who yes - if you are doing something illegal he will surely get you for that too, but I think it showed them that cops aren't meant to be feared. They are to be respected! He told us about an awesome place we could see the night sky and he spoke to us at length, even directing us to the restroom.
We will definitely be back to the lovely little town of Duck and I hope we see Officer Knight again! If you're reading this Officer, thank you so much again and keep up the excellent work! You made us feel very welcome in your town and I hope your employers know what a wonderful...
Read moreRules for thee not for me is the theme. The town council is a group who cherry picks what goes and what dies. If you don’t have connections forget about building anything new. The talk among the town was the old resort reality had plans to become a beer-garden with a great outdoor space…and yet it still stands empty, getting overgrown taking away from the scenery. A plot of undeveloped land on Scarborough lane was supposedly going to be the location of more shops brining new businesses to the area…the last person to buy it has it on the market again. Tourists are required to pack up belongings off the beach at the end of the day (which I fully support), however the sanderling resort is allowed to keep their chairs and umbrellas up overnight. Could it be because they are the largest taxpayer in duck? Seems like good motivation. The point is these, council members (who some have been on the board since 2009) enforce certain rules and regulations while making exceptions for their friends or those who have an in to the group. If thats not the definition of a corrupt government then I am not sure what is. Residents I urge you to choose new council members and get these...
Read moreDuck is an extremely well-managed, beautiful, continually-improving seaside/soundside town. I have been visiting Duck since before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969. I have owned property in Duck since 1987. I now make my permanent residence in Duck and I operate a rental cottage in Duck. Duck is the best place on earth to honeymoon, vacation, live and retire,..and I’ve done all of these things in Duck. Great fishing in the fall and spring; great inexpensive golf courses all year long; a highly-responsive and accommodating group of professionals managing the town, an outstanding police department, a great full-time fire department, highly-responsible hard-working business owners, and the greatest sunsets anywhere. Duck is the best place on earth. My 50 years of life experience in Duck has been, and continues to be, a dream come true. If I could rate Duck 10 stars, I would. I’m looking forward to living out my remaining 30+ years in this beautiful town. - KG...
