Extra Space Storage — Attraction in Edison

I had a large outside storage here for several months. Outside storage has the advantage that you can drive right up to your unit for fast and efficient loading and unloading. Inside storage is usually 'climate controlled' (not to be confused with air conditioning) so your valuables do not suffer from extremes of temperatures. The trade off is that you will have to park and use a central door to walk down a corridor to get to your rental unit. This is more time consuming and a longer walk to and from your vehicle. It can also be more exhausting. We were please with the ease of access to our outside unit.

Staff were very helpful and friendly. The storage facility was clean. My storage space was dry and broom swept before we moved in. It never leaked. Other storage renters were friendly and considerate of each other.

Extended hours of operation made it easy to get into and out of the facility even when Extra Space Storage was closed. I believe I saw a dumpster on property but I never used it and I don't know the policies about its use.

We moved out because we no longer needed extra storage space, but we moved out of this Extra Space Storage facility sooner because although the contract mentions the monthly rental fee may increase, we did not anticipate it going up so often, it seemed to be every month! When I called the Extra Space Storage office on Oak Tree Rd, Edison NJ (not the national number) to question this regularly increasing cost, I was told, "We don't expect you to be here forever." (I) The staff person then 'gave me a special discount' and lowered that month's increase. I thanked the staff member but when the fee increased again, I knew I would release this space as soon as possible.

I would have stayed longer if the fee had not regularly increased. I have since become aware that this is standard operating procedures in this industry. I don't know if a longer rental period such as 6 months or a year rental term would alleviate this monthly increase since the 'term' is often one month renewals in storage spaces. Be sure to inspect any storage unit you are considering for leaks and security.

So I’m at crossroads as to whether or not, I will give this establishment of four or five stars. I’m feeling some kind away about my rent going up $70 in four months, but I guess that’s the nature of the business. However if you pay for the full year you won’t have that problem. I decided to move out because I did not want to pay the additional increase. What I would like to say, is that from the time I moved in until the time I moved out , has been nothing short of exceptional…All of my interactions were with Angel. Angel delivered stellar customer service, professional, kind and courteous and he gives the best advice on how to navigate the property if you have a large truck. He made the entire process seamless. So IF I give this 5 stars is ONLY ONLY ONLY because of Angel’s exceptional customer service.
