From the moment I drove up the winding road and saw the imposing silhouette of Riordan Mansion against the Flagstaff pines, I knew I was in for a treat. This isn't just a historic site; it's a portal to the past, meticulously preserved and bursting with character.
My experience was nothing short of exceptional. Here's what makes Riordan Mansion a 5-star gem:
Captivating Guided Tour: Forget dry, monotonous tours. My guide was engaging, knowledgeable, and brought the Riordan family and Flagstaff history to life. The stories about the opulent furnishings, the innovative design features (central heating in 1904!), and the family's role in shaping the city were fascinating.
Architectural Marvel: The Arts and Crafts style architecture is stunning. The rustic blend of log siding, volcanic stone, and hand-split shingles creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Stepping inside was like entering a bygone era, with grand staircases, spacious rooms, and intricate details that whispered of opulence.
A Window into the Past: Beyond the architecture, the mansion is filled with original furniture, artwork, and everyday objects that paint a vivid picture of life in early 20th-century Flagstaff. It's a tangible connection to the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Riordan family and the community they helped build.
More Than Just a Mansion: The West House Museum housed additional exhibits that broadened my understanding. From Native American pottery to the history of logging, each exhibit was well-curated and informative, offering a deeper context to the mansion and the region.
A Breathtaking Setting: Nestled amongst towering pines, the mansion's location is simply breathtaking. The fresh mountain air, the serene surroundings, and the stunning views added another layer of magic to the experience.
Overall, Riordan Mansion State Historic Park is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply wanting to appreciate a beautiful piece of Arizona's past. It's an educational and enriching experience that will stay with you long after you leave. Don't miss this 5-star gem!
Bonus Tip: Be sure to book your tour in advance, especially during peak season. Also, factor in some time to explore the grounds and enjoy the scenery.

Read moreWhat a complete and lovely surprise this destination was. We have been to the area several times to visit the Grand Canyon and were looking for a different attraction to visit with the kids, 11 & 17. Got to the mansion about noon were planning just doing the $5 walk visit, but found out we could not visit inside the house without doing the tour at 1pm. We decided pay $18 / $12 fee (adult /child) and were were happy we did. The outside walk around is beautiful, the guided information is interesting and pertinent. I definitely recommend taking the time to walk around, read the provided tour and look at the external grounds of the building. There are also plenty of benches and areas to eat, so don't hesitate to bring your lunch. But, the great part is the inside tour itself. Our tour guide was a history student from NAU and she provided a great amount of information, ancedotes about the Riordan family, and the history of the buildings and the grounds. The inside of the home was well maintained and a great look back on history of the time. This was a truly great experience and both of my kids walked away happy that we did this excursion. We were all really impressed with the quality and information that came from that tour. As a side note, while people might say the prices could be lower, as a state park entity, I see this investment going back to the community and the continued preservation of historic sites such as this. Not only did we have a very enjoyable and memorable afternoon, it would have cost us almost as much to go to a movie. However, the lasting effects of this outing go much farther then a singular movie...
Read moreThe rangers working were extremely positive and high energy. Very much appreciated their positive attitude and gracious welcome. The tours are about 1 hour long. There is so much to see and learn that one hour does not feel long enough for larger groups as there is limited time for Q and A. Of particular interest to me was the Riordan’s faith. They were faithful people having met multiple Pope’s, they were active in supporting Catholic schools in the area and the home has a chapel in it. There was no mention of any of this in the tour. Why is this important? The Riordan family were very forward thinkers. They moved their servants from the basement to the same level and same hall as themselves. Servants room were decorated as nicely as their own and they appeared to value their contributions to the family. One must believe that their faith contributed to this ideology. I would have like to have known more about their Faith traditions. But….none of that should distract anyone from seeing this absolute treasure in the heart of Flagstaff! An absolute must see. Again, a huge shout out to the ranger staff for their dedication and...
