The Roads and Rails Museum in Frederick, Maryland is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in transportation history. This museum is a hidden gem that showcases the evolution of transportation in America, with a particular focus on the development of roads and rails.

The museum is located in a historic building that has been beautifully restored to its original glory. Inside, visitors will find an impressive collection of artifacts, exhibits, and interactive displays that tell the story of transportation in America. The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of topics, from the early days of horse-drawn carriages to the rise of the automobile industry and the development of modern highways.

One of the highlights of the museum is its extensive collection of model trains. Visitors can marvel at the intricate details of these miniature locomotives as they chug along the tracks. There is also a large collection of vintage cars and trucks, including a beautifully restored Model T Ford and a 1929 Chevy truck.

The museum is staffed by knowledgeable and friendly volunteers who are always happy to answer questions and provide additional information about the exhibits. There are also plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning, with interactive displays that allow visitors to experience what it was like to travel by stagecoach or to operate a vintage telegraph.

Overall, the Roads and Rails Museum is an excellent destination for anyone interested in transportation history. The museum's exhibits are engaging, informative, and well-presented, and the staff is welcoming and knowledgeable. If you're ever in Frederick, Maryland, be sure to stop by and...

Roads and Rails is quite the place for kids of all ages. Aimed mainly at model railroad fans and those who love miniatures in general, it's a great way to spend an hour or so during an afternoon downtown stroll. There are a couple model train displays in the gift shop, but the real draw is behind the curtain. The model train layout is gigantic! It's a "historical fantasy land" of model railroading, as it's made up of a wide range of model sizes & scales, time periods, and even a few fandoms. Pay close enough attention during your visit and you may see a TARDIS and several of The Doctor's adversaries. Throughout the train layout, you'll find a functioning drive-in theater, the Cobra Kai Dojo from The Karate Kid, an Old West town, an "erupting" volcano, a working carnival complete with roller coaster, a UFO landing, police chases, a prehistoric cave dwelling with residents, and a New York Subway station. At the far end of the model train room is a small display showcasing a piece of coal from the wreck of Titanic. Down a side hall, you'll find the Lego Room, a display created from several dozen individual Lego play sets. Like the main model train layout, it mixes themes and eras, but it's...

Great train set up and so big. My family really enjoyed our visit. We visited on a Sunday and it wasn't too busy. They have a few smaller setups too but the big one is just incredible. You can tell they set it up with love. You can pick up a paper at the register for a scavenger hunt. There are plenty of step stools for the kids around the train set up so they can see everything. There is a separate room which has some Lego setups. This was actually my kids favorite room. So many cool Lego characters in it. The bathrooms are clean. There is free parking behind the museum. I can only recommend this museum to everyone who...

Nice kid friendly diversion to while away 45 mins, especially for the train-obsessed. We stopped here on a long road trip to break up the ride. Frederick is a charming town and this was an impressive train display that totally wowed our 8 year old. We were the only customers (it was 3:30 on a Monday) so we had the run of the place, which was nice. They have a scavenger hunt sheet that helps you notice all the immaculate little details put into this massive (and I mean MASSIVE) display. Would recommend.
