Walk in the footsteps of Revolutionary history as a period-costumed tour guide paints verbal pictures of this building's past lives as home to George Washington's Brother and decades as a local tavern and public house. Follow the GPS and park on one of the nearby streets. We found a spot quickly even though there was a festival happening a few blocks away.

Attended a whiskey tasting event...museum staff in colonial era clothing...discussed the history of whiskey in the colonies then the country. Placed the significance of whiskey in historical context. Good event. Original home built in 1760 by Charles Washington, youngest brother of George, after whom Charlestown, WV was named.

A wonderful tour! Our guide brought history to life as she explained what the accommodations, food, and local customs were like in a colonial tavern. Of particular interest was the origin of various sayings like "double fisted drinker". Not to be missed!

We had to wait a little bit to take the tour since there was a private tour going on when they first opened. The wait was fine, and we were glad we decided to go back.

The docent was extremely knowledgeable and very personable. We really enjoyed the tour.

There are many artifacts at the location to see and enjoy, including a replica of the bar, which was fascinating.

After touring several hundred locations, this is the first time we heard how the taverns worked back when they were in operation. The fact that families would sometimes have to share beds or rooms with other families at times... yeesh.

If we ever find ourselves back in the area again, we would probably include this location as one of our stops.

Thank you, an...

Continuing on the occasional trips to historic sites in the Washington DC area and not too far beyond, we drove to Frederick and went to the Rising Sun Tavern.

What an interesting site. The tour was great and our guide really brought to life what it was like to live in the 18th century and, even more interestingly, what it was like to travel in the 18th century.

I am really glad that I live in an age where there are more amenities when you travel. Nonetheless, I loved stepping back in time and imagining what it would have been like to be living at the time of the American Revolution.

Definitely one of the more interesting historical sites that I have been to. I recommend going! The guided tour...

Visited it once and one day hope to visit it again. Got a wonderful tour from a guide who treated me and my mom like we were visitors in the 18th century. He explained how the tavern operated, prices, services, how people who (in some cases could not do simple math) kept track of their drinks, postal service, what was available at the time in room and board. Want a bath? River is just down the street. Best guided historical tour I have EVER had. But that was many years ago and I am not sure what is available right now. Still, a lovely building with a LOT of history and a good site to see along side the...
