The 1890 Caroline House — Attraction in Fredericksburg

Gathering of old friends in Fredericksburg for three nights. My wife and I were in the Caroline House with others of our group booked into the Richard Johnston Inn, the B&B's other historic facility 1.5 blocks up Caroline Street. Have always been apprehensive about B&Bs, choosing the predictability and standardization of name brand hotels... Outstanding experience. Facility. Wonderful historic facilities updated to provide all expected modern conveniences and hotel functions. Arrived on a Thursday, finding that if rooms are unoccupied, they are left open, enabling touring of the entire facility. The historic rooms and suites are each unique, but complete in their amenities. Breakfast. While the staff serves freshly made breakfast daily in each property, they happily accommodated our request to dine each morning with our group in the Richard Johnston Inn. Parking. Dedicated parking was available at the RJ Inn, an easy stroll from the Caroline House, but also on street with some limitations or in a municipal parking deck. Local Area. Great environment of restaurants, bars, shops, parks and historic attractions within a few steps or blocks. Staff. All staff members were engaging, accommodating, absolutely professional and highly attentive, ensuring everyone enjoyed their stay. Bottom Line. We stayed this past weekend at the 1890 house. Stayed in the William riley suite which was well worth it! Very spacious. We enjoyed having the living area with the gas fireplace in our room and the tub with jets. The B&B shared space was beautfully decorated and if we had more time there we would have spent more time in the sitting room. We were no more than a 10 minute walk to all of the restaurants (with some within 200 feet of the B&B) and a 15 minute walk from the Civil war battlefield sites. Kelsey was very accommodating with all of our needs and we enjoued the breakfasts and the complemtary snacks and brandy. ;-) Couple of notes here. The bed in the Riley suite was creaking every time we got in bed or moved around. I found the mattress to be uncomfortable Probably both the frame and the mattress could use replacing. Secondly, as others have commented, it is a little loud outside and they do supply ear plugs but for someone like me that it is very sensitive to noise, it's a little overwhelming with all of the loud cars whizzing by. Luckily, it does seem to calm down around 10:30-11pm, but if you're looking for a peaceful afternoon in the room, it is a little loud. This is no fault of the inn and it is...

We were a little disappointed in our stay - maybe our expectations were too high. The first morning's breakfast was scrumptious - French toast with bananas, pecans, whipped cream, and bourbon syrup. And the afternoon treat was some chocolate peanut butter cookies which were good. We did enjoy the 2 sided fireplace in the William Riley suite immensely which operated with the flip of a switch. The street traffic noise was a bit loud for us, the second day's afternoon treat was the same cookies from the day before, and the last day we had exactly 4 small oatmeal cookies for the 2 of us. We had to leave before breakfast which was a huge disappointment missing breakfast so they put out 2 muffins and the same fruit and yogurt we had all 3 mornings. We had difficulty making the DVD player work and called and left a message, but no one ever acknowledged our call. Thankfully my husband was able to figure it out. The toilet paper was single ply which is really not satisfactory for an expensive place. All in all it was a nice stay and I'm not trying to be hurtful but these things were kind of important to us and thought they might matter to...
