My stay at The Retreat at Fuquay-Varina from July 2022 to August 2023 was a descent into disappointment and chaos. As a prehealth professional with a history of rentals in various locations, I expected a pleasant stay, but this complex shattered all expectations. Brace yourselves, this is a detailed recount of the nightmare I endured.
The Management Nightmare Initially, the management appeared amiable. Mackenzie, in particular, was helpful, but the veneer of competence quickly faded. The turnover rate was alarming—multiple managers rotated in and out, leaving a trail of disorganization. This inconsistency culminated in the most unprofessional experience with Tina, a blonde, thin, Caucasian manager. Her demeanor transformed from cordial to outright dismissive and unsympathetic. Requests for resolution regarding late fees due to system glitches or trash pickup discrepancies were met with blame-shifting and refusal to address the issues.
Lack of Community and Disunity The lack of community spirit was palpable. A manager’s inappropriate treatment of my younger brothers and the poor construction that allowed sound to permeate through walls exemplified the disregard for residents. Our attempts to resolve issues, such as missing speakers, were met with indifference and a lack of assistance from the front desk. The disunity was stark—contrasting with previous rental experiences, this place lacked a sense of belonging or safety.
Safety Concealed and Unaddressed The complex concealed crucial safety concerns. An undisclosed shooting incident among residents led to nighttime police patrols, yet the management chose silence over transparency. My stolen speakers remained unaddressed, showcasing a blatant disregard for resident safety and an unwillingness to assist in resolving security issues.
Apartment Woes and Noise Hell The apartments were a cacophony of flaws. Thin walls amplified every sound, turning daily life into an audio intrusion. Arguments, barking dogs, and unfinished, poorly constructed apartments highlighted a stark contrast to the promised quality.
A Complex System, Broken and Unresponsive The archaic rent payment system exacerbated frustrations. Despite setting up autopay, glitches led to multiple instances of unpaid rent and unwarranted eviction notices. Despite presenting evidence, the unaccommodating manager, Tina, persisted in enforcing late fees, adding financial strain to the chaos.
Avoid The Retreat at Fuquay-Varina To those considering this complex: reconsider. My time here was a constant source of frustration and worry. Unprofessional management, shoddy apartments, ignored safety concerns, and a severe lack of community make this place unfit for habitation.

Read moreI don’t normally give reviews but after years of moving between states and multiple different apartment homes, I wish I saw more honest reviews about neighborhoods! So here goes mine!
The retreat at fuquay varina has been nothing short of fantastic for my family and I. The apartments themselves, not too bad. Truly doesn’t change much between the different complexes, but these ones seem to be holding up a little better than most and require less maintenance.
The thing I find that separates the retreat at fuquay is the community. It’s very clean, quiet, peaceful and safe. It’s one of the few places you see any more where there are kids outside playing together! Whether they’re using the playground which is kept clean, or at the pool which is very well taken care of! It’s a very well maintained community which makes taking evening walks actually relaxing and stress relieving, with all of the neighbors we’ve encountered having been very respectful and very kind!
The clubhouse here is actually very nice, having a great Game Center with pool tables and other games. It also has one of the nicest apartment style gyms I’ve come across over the past 7 years of renting.
The office and maintenance staff have been very helpful and kind! It’s nice to be in an apartment complex that doesn’t get bought out and swap staff every 6 months. They’re quick to resolve maintenance requests, and they’re actually personable! You can tell they aren’t being nice because they’re paid too, they actually stay involved and want to talk!
The placement is perfect! You’re no more than 5 minutes away from anything you need. Grocery stores, gas stations, fast food and plenty of restaurants to sit down at, gyms and yoga studios, etc. The location really doesn’t get much better in my eyes. But as I said, this community is what makes the difference. They have so many different activities to keep the entire community entertained. From pool parties, to craft nights, food trucks, and create your own ice cream sundaes! I really appreciate the way the staff gives the residents so many different opportunities to get out and be involved, even though I work all the time and my family kind of likes being hermits. But from time to time, my girls actually love to get out and be involved. Just having the option is nice!
In closing, the retreat at fuquay varina is by far the best apartment community I’ve lived in. I plan to be here for a few years until I’m ready to purchase my home. The community as a whole is 5 stars, and the apartments themselves I’d give 4 stars. I personally don’t know of another complex around here that I’d...
Read moreWhere should I even begin. DO NOT MOVE IN TO THIS COMPLEX. I read another review below about fraudulent moveout charges, and I am currently suffering from the same issue. I was told I had the right to be there for my walkthrough, but was never told when it was going to be. While living there, we had multiple issues directly caused by their inept maintenance workers being negligent (water leaking through the ceiling because they didn’t hook up a waterline above us, dust accumulation since they didn’t hook up the dryer vent hose). They protected one of their maintenance workers who was engaging in sexual acts at the pool (in front of children and multiple witnesses, and there are security cameras) after it was reported both to the apartment and to the police. They were still allowed to be at the pool after this. They brought in a shady carpet vendor (Hills) who I spoke with personally on the phone, who said they had already ripped up the carpet to look under it, which means they had already chosen to replace the carpet. He said that they only recommended complete carpet replacement, blamed all of the damage on pet damage which is untrue (they said there was dog hair after I vacuumed, cleaned the carpets, and my dog doesn’t shed he’s hypoallergenic). I wouldn’t be surprised if Hills and the Retreat are committing this scam together. This was done without my knowledge, approval, and I was sent a bill two weeks after the carpet was assessed and already replaced, and told my (ex) roommate and I we had 24 hours to pay or it would be sent to collections. My ex roommate is refusing to pay for her part even though the contract and agreements say we are equally responsible for all damages, but even if I sent in my part of what was owed, it would still be considered a partial payment and be sent to collections to hit both of our credit. The retreat refuses to request the money directly from her even though they have her forwarding address and sent the bill to her as well, and told me I could file in small claims which would cost me more time, money, stress, etc. and would not assure that I get the money that I am owed. There is no evidence in the form of pictures, and it is impossible to reinspect the apartment at this point. The property manager Tina Hart is rude, unprofessional, argumentative, raised her voice at me and talked over me on the phone, then had the audacity to hang up on me. I have reached out to the regional manager and haven’t heard anything. It looks nice on the outside, but all they’re out for is money. Save yourself the stress and do...
