Di Big Jerk — Attraction in Gainesville

Long review, so be warned!! Writing this after eating a delectable order of Di Angry Chicken and Shrimp (together?!?!) Tacos 🤤 (yes, there’s an up charge for both in the tacos, but idc idc, it’s gas )

As a 2nd gen daughter to a dad from Montego Bay, and as a self-proclaimed chef 👩🏾‍🍳, I’d say that my opinion is valuable 🤷🏾‍♀️. I’ve been coming to this place since before they had a Gainesville brick and mortar ( I know…a LONG time🤯😎), and then I came to Gville for college 🤩, and lo and behold, they followed me here 😆.

Food: 9.5/10 Genuinely have had almost everything on the menu more than once (vegan and vegetarian too, yes!) and it’s sooooo good!! Any time I’ve had a complaint, they’ve remade my order and it’s come out great! (No need to be rude if something tastes off. Be an adult and have a respectful conversation and express your opinions. Treat others the way you want to be treated, lol, not that hard.)

Traditional plates: gas 🔥 For some reason, a lot of folks don’t like the island slaw 🤷🏾‍♀️. It’s a refreshing citrusy salad that cuts through the oil of the rich gravy that comes on a lot of the entrees, so that’s my preferred veggie side. The cabbage is good too tho, don’t play. Also, don’t expect things to taste the way ya granny made it. The owner is not ya granny, and that’s okay 🤷🏾‍♀️. The one thing I will say, though, is the untraditional pairing of rice and peas with everything (yes, even the curry 🫣), but hey, more protein and fiber in my rice is fine by me🤗. They offer two portion sizes, lunch and dinner, with lunch being served until 3:30 pm. Some folks are gagged about the prices, but lowkey I eat twice from a dinner portion. That’s like 7-9 bucks a serving, and I eat like a teenage boy sometimes, so I think that’s reasonable! The oxtail 🤤🫠🫣 IS expensive, but SOOO gas and better than other places I’ve had that are cheaper, so you really get what you pay for. There’s also daily specials, but if you call and check what they have, they might have a daily special not typically offered on that day of the week!!

American-ish fare: 🔥 🔥 🔥 You would think that a Jamaican restaurant wouldn’t really put much effort into their American fare but man, those burgers are SOOOO good 🤦🏾‍♀️. Like, I’ve never had a burger so good 🙏🏾. AND THEY ALL COME WITH FRIES 😵😵. Most burger joints are 14-17 bucks anyway, and the owner is super accommodating with toppings! Again, just be respectful 🤷🏾‍♀️ you’re not entitled to change the menu, the owner is just kind enough to do it 🤗. Didn’t really expect to love the egg rolls, but when I want a switch up, AMAZING!! AND THOSE COME WITH FRIES TOO ?!?!

The rice bowl is unreasonably low priced. Like, 2-3 portions come out of one bowl (gym bros, it’s chicken breast, rice, beans, and veggies 😎😵. Get the sauces on the side for more macro friendly eating 👍🏾).

They sometimes have corn bread too??? Gas. Just gotta go at the right time or ask the owner the next time he’ll make some. It’s HONEY BUTTER SCOTCH BONNET cornbread 😭😭😭🤤.

Tacos and wraps: what else can I say?? Literally ate the tacos and felt the need to make a book for this place 🙏🏾. Be warned though, Angry means spicy 🥵. They’re macro friendly and filling though!! (Three tacos for 13$? Sign me up!)(THE WRAPS COME WITH FRIES TOO ?!!)

Vegan and vegetarian options: IDK who said plant-based had to be gross and underwhelming 🤷🏾‍♀️. Actually so incredible. They have just veggie, tofu, or tempeh options!! Ask for an accommodation (example: brown stew tofu 🤤) and they’ll most likely make it for you!

Bevs: THEY MAKE THEIR OWN SORREL AND PINEAPPLE-GINGER BEER?!?! 🔥 They also make to-order lemonades that are AMAZING! Personally, I like my lemonade on the less-sweet side, so I’ll literally split the lemonade and add water. Two lemonades for the price of one 🤷🏾‍♀️. (That’s just me though!)

All in all, a really great restaurant, fair pricing, and great atmosphere! May the business be blessed, in Jesus name, and may they continue to grow daily!! PS: They’ll give you oxtail...

I heard about this place from my coworker. He tried the jerk chicken tacos, he offered me 1 to try. The 1st time is was heavenly delicious 😋. That was over a month ago, so I've been craving my own personal tacos, because that 1 He shared wasn't enough. Im a thick madame. Anywho, so today I got that chance to go get the same thrill for myself. I got my Jerk Chicken tacos, Yay!!. When I ate the 1st one it was more of the pineapple- mango salsa then anything. The chicken was hard, dry, and distasteful. So I tried the second one thing the 1st was just a little off. NOPE!! The 2cnd was as well, I felt like I paid for the salsa and not the jerk chicken. I literally counted 6 small pieces of chicken on my taco. So after that I just offered the 3rd time my coworker because I wasn't satisfied with the portion of meat on my taco, and I did mention it was dry, over-cooked and slightly burnt. If I could get my money back I would. Anyways I'm not negative Nancy, Ill give it 1 more shot before throwing in my tortillas. You can take your denture out to chew the brown stew chicken the tendernism goes brazy and the flavor is heavenly, the beef patties have a nice flakiness to the dough and good solid flavor definitely order them when fresh though if you can, the cabbage has a nice refreshing zest to balance out the savory of all the meat and bread, the rice and beans were the only thing that didn’t wow me but they are still solid.
