Enter water at own risk. NO Lifeguards at this bay. Advanced Surf and Bodyboarding area only.
When surf is present swimming or snorkeling is ill advised. Waves are very deceptive due to the reefs and layout of this area- the street and beach area sits up higher then the waterline, many beachgoers find themselves in trouble as they underestimate the size and power of the waves from the higher viewing point and find themselves caught in the current and riptides when waves are present.
Shallow reefs, strong shorebreak and rip tides.
Grassy area and sand for picnicking and sun bathing BUT no sandy bay (in water). This bay is filled with rocks and reef and lots of sea urchins.
Dangerous during winter swells but during summer when surf is minimal this bay is much different and can be great for snorkeling, and paddle boarding but pay attention to the currents, rip tides, and...
Read moreGreat spot! I was excited to ride waves at this historic little spot. I asked some local kids what to watch out for before I paddled out and they mainly mentioned the obvious reef jutting on the right side. There is “cookie” which is a pretty obvious rock that’s exposed here and there and it does look a little like a Chips Ahoy. Then there is also a “shelf” close to cookie that’s mainly underwater but you can see water spilling from it back into the channel. Just beware of those features on the right (looking from the beach pov) and you should be good. Put-in is a tad rocky and shallow but not bad. Tons of yellow fish all over in the water called yellow tangs, according to the local kids. It’s pretty cool riding clear waves and passing over those guys by a couple feet. Oh, and there are bathrooms and a shower across the street...
Read moreVisited Honl's beach in May 2023 and May 2024 with my Partner whilst our stay in Kona. It is a lovely beach quite small but it wasn't busy. Both times we were there the waves were quite big so I wouldn't say it would be suitable for kids of snorkeling, but maybe more into summer the waves die down a wee bit. There wasn't much facilities ie restrooms, eateries etc, but you not far away from the centre of Kona. There is shaded bit from the sun in a grassy area which has a few trees, would be good for a picnic. I would recommend visiting Honl's beach as we liked it, you may spot sea turtles and you may find seashells. There was also a plack in the shape of a surf board saying that is where the surf board came from years ago. Steve and...
