Aloha Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. I am an artist, designer and community organizer in arts and nonprofits on the Big Island of Hawaii for the last 20 years. My son was baptized, given his first communion and confirmation in your parish. Father Leo rescued our naughty dog Lily once from our driveway and took good care of her. On Thursday May 8, I came into the church midmorning with an urgent request to see father Leo. I The short, slightly rotund gray haired white lady with glasses was in church. We had a major family crisis and I was in distress. I asked her for father leo for an emergency confession and blessing. She refused and sent me away, saying I was crazy, so I baptized myself and waited by the statue outside for father Leo, and he never came. I was there maybe an hour. She called me crazy and filmed me. I returned later that afternoon, showered and calm , in work clothes, and went into the admin office to apologize and leave my ID. I again requested father Leo. The ladies in the office, a short overweight asian lady and a lovely local looking woman with long hair told me to go away and that I was crazy. You still have my ID and I've never gotten a call or response. I'm available to meet directly this week at church, in my office by Honokohau Harbor, or at West Hawaii Mediation. This is now a formal public complaint to the Catholic...
Read moreOur Big Island vacation included St. Michael the Archangel Church while visiting Kailua-Kona. We were not able to attend a mass, but the church is so peaceful and beautiful with its open-air layout you want to just sit and take it all in. The architecture is modern and simple allowing one to focus on their spiritual needs.
There is a small cemetery along the parking lot with a sculpture that makes you feel the full emotional bond of a mother and child. The grounds are beautifully manicured and have wonderful statues and religious icons, including a gorgeous marble statue of St. Michael and a Blessed Virgin choral grotto.
Upon entering the church you are greeted by the baptismal font which is an actual fountain, filling the space with the sound of its tranquil flowing waters. Magnificent mosaics of Mary, Jesus and local saints adorn the rear of the nave. The stations of the cross that adorn the walls of the nave are beautiful in their subtle colors.
St. Michael the Archangel is just a short walk away from Huliheʻe Royal Palace and definitely worth a visit, even if you’re just passing by or looking for a...
Read moreThis mass was very disappointing. I have attended mass here on several occasions over the last eight years at earlier times of the day and was happy with the reverence of the service. This time the mass at 4:00 pm on Sunday was focused more around the gentleman playing the piano and singing and not so much on the true reason why we go to mass which is honoring our Lord Jesus Christ. There were many unnecessary modifications to the music to suit him and upstage Christ. I feel musicians in church should be humble when singing praise to God and not looking for an applause.. We go to church to give praise to God, not the “Choir”.I tithe weekly at my home parish and usually give when on vacation but, it didn’t feel right to support this mass which...
