Adopted a cat here for my dad. Came on a Friday at an hour after opening. Parking was pretty full, but got lucky parking on the side street lot. Checked out the cat house: worker girl communicated well and was friendly enough. We took awhile visiting all of the cats and putting them through our stringent interview process. About 1.5 hours later, we decided and “checked in” via the QR code. From that moment, I think we waited almost 2 hours as the staff helped a queue of people in front of us. Only reason I remember this is because I was under the impression that adopting wouldn’t take long, and I thought I’d be able to squeeze in 9 holes in a Friday afternoon. I think part of the problem is that the the staff is not making proper use of the QR system and website. It’s either that, or it’s the 3rd party website problem, but I N don’t think so. The system is similar to the one Genki Sushi uses where you check in your party via website, then you are given your place, and how many people are in front of you. At the HHS, when we checked in, the site said there were 3 people in front of us. As the 2 hours ticked by, we continually checked our place and the 3 never changed. Now why is this an issue? The site gives a good indication of how long the wait will be. No one likes waiting, but they’ll be less upset if you give them an idea of how long you need to wait. HHS actually makes it worse by having you check in, then give you false info via the website. 4-stars for the staffs love of animals. Yeah they might not be the most efficient and getting new pet owners out the door, but you can tell that they genuinely care about the animals. I would definitely come back to adopt another pet, I just know to block off my entire day. I give props to these workers: you can tell they love animals. Everyone from the ladies

Storytime: A stray orange cat followed my kids home one day. It was limping, dirty, and skinny. The cat was so sweet I was able to bath her, trim her nails and clean her ears but she kept trying to lead me somewhere (like she was lost) she would stop by a car and assume I knew the way.. I didn’t. I felt do bad for her and I knew she was once owned because of her sweet demeanor. Long story short.- one week and a half later I tried to take her to the vet only to be told that tipped eared cats are microchipped and they cant touch her or help her.. only the caretaker or owner can. They suggested the Humane Society. Normally Im not for sending strays to the humane society because they belong to colonies but this cat did not fit that description at all. She was searching for someone. When I got to the humane society they explained the 5 day process and what happens afterwards if the pet is healthy or not. I called and left a message that if owner didn’t get her Id take her. That Sweet cat didn’t have to stay 24 hours there. I was on the website watching her status like a hawk and her picture disappeared by 3ish the next day. I am So happy the Owner found her cat The cat was Searching for something.. this made me cry. Thank you for reuniting this lost cat to its loved one. She is an Amazing sweet feline. Scruffy looking but best soul ever. Such an amazing ending. Thank you Humane Society for reuniting the pet and its owner. (Ewa Beach) location.

Something that gives love so freely, deserves some in return. While on vacation on the beautiful island of Oahu, I decided to stop in and visit a friend, after recalling how we missed out on the experience in Kauai. I arrived mere minutes before they opened, and was pretty much first in line to choose my companion for the next hour. Walking the path, from cage to cage, I saw rows of pups just waiting for someone to pay them some kind of attention. The friendly ones came and sniffed my hand, while the more timid sat towards the back of their kennel. There are so many to choose from, but you know when its right. Flashing those bright eyes at me, and I knew she was the one. Walking back to the desk, I gave them the kennel number, and was escorted back to pick her up. So excited, I'll bet she dreamed her day would include a walk with a side of kisses. We toured all around that property, even in the areas that were off limits. It was her day to live, and by golly, I was going to let her. So, if you have an extra hour on a weekend, stop by and brighten the day of a little buddy. Even if you cant take them home, you can surely give them what they want. ...love wanted

This Humane Center sits on a beautiful campus, with two cat, and two dog "houses". They are all always clean and well-attended to. There are ample volunteers to help visit with/walk/answer questions about animal you might bw interested in. Many of them also walk the dogs outside shelter grounds, up King St and take them to play at the Kalo mini dog park, located behind the shelter. They sometimes have "specials", when they reduce the adoption fees for certain animals. From what I can tell, these are highly adoptable pets, that are just taking too long to find their people. I adopted my super sweet mastiff mix there as a February "sweetheart special". The cost, normally $100, was only $14.

I subtracted a star for two reasons. One: because they ARE a kill shelter. If you are not willing to support this type of operation, it's best to look elsewhere. That said, the animals seem to live very comfortably during their time there, however it ends, and that's a whole heap better than whatever they face alone on the streets.

Reason Two: when I adopted my dog, I was not given all of his relevant history and health background information. Fortunately for my boyfriend, myself, and el perro, I grew up with untold numbers of rescue dogs and noticed a few things right away. When I went back to press them about his probable (constant and extreme) abuse, and his eye condition, the employees were very helpful and spent good effort tracking down official AND little handwritten notes from the veterinarian, behaviorist, and volunteers. They were very apologetic and I have zero complaints about my experience. It was hectic on the day I adopted, and it was a simple accident.

The last thing I will say is that this shelter also hosts a pet food bank for people facing financial. Be warned! You cannot just go up and ask for food. There's a whole application process and, because the food bank runs on donations (unopened bags or cans accepted- Please give!), There is no guarantee that there will be any offerings when you need it .

**please note: there are so many animals that need homes on Oahu. Kittens and puppies are adorable, but a LOT of work. If you have lots of love, but less so patience for cleaning up accidents, PLEASE consider bringing home an older animal. My dog was 8 1/2 when we met. He has some complex trauma, and mild health problems, but he is great on a leash, housebroken, and just a laid-back, chill old dude. We won't have as much time together as I might a younger dog, but I'm grateful every day that I don't have to try to clean poo out of my carpet...

My youngest son just adopted a puppy from Hawaiian Humane Society, a little over 2 weeks ago!!! He got a 6 month old male AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER MIX!!! We named him Mana, which in Hawaiian means POWER!!! He is BLONDE in coloring, and GORGEOUS 👍🥰❣️ His paperwork listed him as a stray, but he doesn't act as a typical stray WOULD... ¯(ツ)/¯ ..... A FAMILY DID HOWEVER ADOPT HIM, BUT RETURNED HIM IN ABOUT A WEEK, stating that they didn't think that he would need much training 💔... My son is under NO SUCH DELUSIONS...HE UNDERSTANDS THAT THIS DOG NEEDS FULL TRAINING AND CARE👍🥰❣️ Totally different matter, I did learn that our HUMANE SOCIETY, has a special program for SENIOR CITIZENS ~ 55 AND OLDER 😂👍❣️ DON'T KNOW ALL THE SPECIFICS, BASICALLY IF YOU ARE OVER 55 AND ADOPT A PET THAT IS 7 YEARS OR OLDER, YOU ONLY PAY A CERTAIN AMOUNT(VERY REASONABLE PRICE) 👍🥰❣️This is an amazing program👍🥰❣️ I personally was going to have my husband go down with my son, but it didn't work out because my son was adamant about wanting a PUPPY!!! THIS IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE THAT ARE ABLE TO USE IT👍🥰❣️ I HIGHLY recommend the HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY before going to a BREEDER!!! And even before an add online,by far!!! For one HUGE REASON ALONE... YOUR ANIMAL YOU RECEIVE WILL BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED BY THE HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY 👍🥰❣️ This is an IMPERATIVE NEED TO OUR ANIMAL POPULATION PROBLEM HERE ON O'AHU!!! PLEASE REMEMBER TO SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS!!! BOTH FOR THEIR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHER ANIMALS AROUND THEM👍🥰❣️ EDIT TO ORIGINAL REVIEW UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAD TO SURRENDER MANA BACK TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY AS HE IS A VERY AGGRESSIVE DOG💔. HE BIT & BROKE THE SKIN OF MY SON REPEATEDLY DURING THE ALMOST 3 WEEKS WE HAD HIM AND KEPT GETTING MORE AGGRESSIVE EVEN WITH DAILY POSITIVE TRAINING & REINFORCEMENT💔. MY HUSBAND & SON MADE THE FINAL CALL TO RE-SURRENDER HIM BACK TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY BEFORE HE COULD HURT SOMEONE IN OUR FAMIY💔. WE NOW HAVE A 5TH CAT🐈‍⬛🥰❣️ ** 💫💗🫂🎄Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year) from our 'ohana to yours.🎄🫂💗💫 💞ALOHA FROM HAWAI'I...

We were looking to adopt a kitten there, looked on the web site and there was only one kitten to adopt. We were looking to adopt a kitten named Lani which was on their website a few days before we went in but unfortunately she was not for adoption? I was very disappointed, talked to one of the workers and they seem to not know anything about her at that point it was very disappointing cause I had just lost my cat his name was "Boo Boo"and Lani looked like my Boo Boo's sister. The worker explained to us that Lani was 1 month old and they do not adopt kittens until their 2mths old or at least 2lbs so they can be sprayed or neutered but still could not give anymore information about Lani we left feeling very unhappy. But as the weekend came we gotten up early and I checked their website and the was 1 kitten 2mths old a male his name was Chester. We were excited even thou he didn't look like our Boo Boo he was a tabby black and brown and the same age when I found my Boo Boo.We got there a little after 10 when they opened on Saturday and ther he was our newest member to our family. So all and all we did find our new baby boy kitten which I changed his name from Chester to Kolohe.I just wish there would have more kittens to adopt on their website and that they would be my informative about the kittens that they have in their Lost&Found, cause not everyone wants a adult cat which for a kittens was more suitable for us.That was really the only thing that I didn't give them 5stars because of the lack of kittens for adoption and know my in their Lost Found which had a lot.Who claims those kittens or what happens to them they say they put those for adoption but I haven't seen any of those kittens for adoption and some of them are 2 to 3 months some haves been admitted there since Feburary 2019,but there should be consistently on information on those animals in Lost & Found cause it could make a difference in...
