All in all, a downright terrible university. It is a private school so the environment is pretty small, in some ways that may seem good to help a student focus, in other ways that is bad because it turns the school into money hungry vultures.
This is an absolutely honest review from someone who attended the school. The professors are decent, some are okay some are awful. Your grade and how well you do highly depends on your professors because instead of having a set exam for a set class, a different professor can give you an easy take home exam back to back while another professor for that same class can give you the hardest test with no use of notes or anything. It really is not fair in my opinion and it's like going to this school is taking a gamble, it can be really simple for few and straight hell for others.
The school charges students financially for literally everything and anything you can think of. Students almost live in constant fear of or their superiors simply because the school is snatching money from theirs and their parents bank accounts. If you even question why you're being charged or getting in trouble for something they will say the same typical "well there's really nothing we can do about it" response and leave you to pay them 100s of dollars for things you didn't even know you did.
The new college of engineering was a bad experience, Keith drake one of the professors made his students challenge themselves first semester and a lot of them failed, dropped, or changed majors completely. He then "lightened up" on the students the next semester so basically his first batch of students were test dummies and done an extremely terrible hand.
The sports at this school are a joke, athletes leave a lot because they feel their talent is not being used properly here which is very true. The living conditions are dreadful for freshman boys. The living area called the MRC constantly floods because the draining system is a mess. There are workers constantly making noise fixing and draining the building of water, they had to tear apart the grass in front of the building to pipe lines and now that area of the campus looks disgusting. There is a major problem with bugs, and the wifi is absolutely useless. It prohibits students from even successfully living in their dorms. And to have to be forced to leave that disgusting place only to step foot outside and see water all over the ground blocking the pathway and being forced to go around the back, also power going out and water shutting off, it is a truly awful experience. I don't understand why people say the campus is so beautiful, it is in all honesty mediocre. Pictures can make it look really good, but up to date real time visits give you an insight of how grotesque the campus really is. The best living area is the Hodo which is where upperclassmen live. From what I've seen they have no issues, I guess all the money goes to that building. I've stayed in the building multiple times and it is a much better living environment, however that doesn't change the fact that the school is emptying your pockets the longer you spend time there. The food is sub par, some days it's good some days it's terrible. I'm not picky so I was satisfied with the food most of the time. Students get a declining balance that they can spend at chic fil a or other places on campus along with the cafeteria.
The campus is very boring at times and if you aren't constantly studying or working then you'll find yourself with absolutely nothing to do unless you go to the small events they have from time to time.
The gym is literally apart of a hospital that the school bought and it isn't the best but if you aren't crazy about fitness it won't bother you. I do not recommend paying for the gym membership because it is extremely overpriced and the whole system is shady, luckily students get the membership paid for in the tuition which must be another excuse why they charge so much for it. So I suggest you atleast make use of the gym if since you're paying for it.
Basically, DO...
Read moreI never went to this school, but I feel the need to say something. I figured since I do not have the time to go to HBU myself since I am two hours away, writing this review is the closest thing I can do to getting this story out. If either this doesn’t make it out, or it does and gets ignored, then at least I tried.
I work sports events at SHSU, and about two weeks ago HBU came to SHSU for a baseball game. Before the game started, HBU was down on the field warming up. I was standing on the third base side in the bleachers making sure nobody crossed over the fence that lead to the top of the dugout. One of the coaches was standing near the home base practicing his swings. The bat slipped out of his hands, flew to me and hit me in the back of the head. This caused my head to bleed excessively, and I was sent to the emergency room to get staples in my head. I came back to the baseball field the next day, and a few witnesses told me that the coach that injured me just disappeared. I couldn’t see, but that was what I was told. Later that day, my bosses told me the head coach of HBU was willing to have HBU help cover my medical bills...that is if my workman’s compensation and school insurance won’t cover it all. About a week later, I found out that my workman’s compensation, and the school insurance would be able to cover my medical bills. So basically I’m not getting anything from either HBU, or the coach.
I am aware that what happened was unintentional. It was a complete accident, and the coach didn’t mean to injure me. But because I was in a lot of pain, I feel that this isn’t something to be taken lightly and to just walk away from. The coach injured me, and he isn’t doing anything about it. So from my point of view, this situation was basically a hit and run.
This review wasn’t meant for HBU. It was more towards the baseball coach. As I stated, if this either doesnt get enough attention, or it does but gets...
Read moreI'm reading that people are giving flak about HBU's Nursing School and a little bit about one of the engineering professors. I cannot speak for those two colleges of HBU, but I know that my experience in the mathematics department, biology, chemistry, and physics department have been overall positive. I think it's important that those who spoke about the nursing school spoke out about their experiences.
As for a perspective on the liberal arts side of HBU, I have some limited experience--but my experiences have been mostly positive as well. The Spanish classes can be fun if you want to take them as electives and useful for any career or job in Houston, especially. The Greek/Latin/Hebrew classes are also interesting for those who are more inclined to reading ancient manuscripts out of curiosity.
Regarding the psychology department of HBU, I really love the psychology department at HBU. Looking at PubMed, I noticed that we have some papers published from our psychology department.
There's also the occasional Friday night Improv shows in Mabee Theater (usually in Mabee Theater, a few times on the rooftop of Hodo) around 9 pm--just be sure to check on HBU's website or Sunday emails.
HBU is growing, and I'm hoping to see how it grows over time. The recent critical reviews are important for voicing their experiences--I agree--but there are still a lot of other parts of this university that's worth appreciating (e.g., the psychology department, the Improv shows on Friday nights) and you can be a part of...
