Memorial City Mall is very nice, clean, and modern Mall. However, they're making their presence to become obsolete. I arrived at 6:00 pm and casually went through 2 stores (The Hallmark Shop and the Texas Store). Both of which I enjoyed. Sadly, while walking the corridors of the Mall, I noticed several Kiosks already closed or wrapping their security tarps around them. It was only 7:15 pm now. I then went into the Fossil store. Excellent service and a great variety of their products.I was even more impressed that all of their Wallets have RFID blocking. While I was there, I asked the store clerk what time the Mall closes. I was a bit surprised to hear that they close at 8:00 pm. I'm used to Malls being open from 10 am to 9 pm. Closing at 8 pm doesn't give much time for those who get off work at 5 or 6 pm. I walked past the Michael Kors store only to notice that they have a His and Hers store right next to each other. Unfortunately, on the Men's side, the lights were off (with the exception of their security lights) and the doors closed. There wasn't even an Employee visible in the store. Next door on their Women's side, the lights were on, door opened, but here too, no Employees were visible. Call me "Old Fashioned," but I like being able to see, feel, and if needed, try on clothes before buying them. I enjoy that "One on One," personal experience when shopping. But if the hours aren't available to shop, or in this case, closing before the posted hours. It doesn't give much trust in going there after work. Even in the Food Court, I noticed one restaurant with the Menu Board turned off and half of the food already removed from theSteam Table. With the Food Court next to the Movie theater and people getting ready to leave, they were definitely missing out on Sales Opportunities. I don't care for On-line Shopping, but if this early closing trend, and reduced hours is the way of the future for Malls; I guess I'll have to start getting used to the issues of ordering On-line. Incidentally, I couldn't find the restaurant, Maggiano. I noticed the signs inside, pointing to go outside, but to no avail. Did they close? And if they did, why weren't the signs inside the Mall...
Read moreIf you were around before the eventual decline of the mall as a shopping destination around the 2010s to present, Memorial City Mall was one of the absolute best options aside from the Galleria. Places like this are on the decline and will eventually turns to neglected relics of a lost age. We need to bring back Arcades, why did they ever go away?
The food court then, and even to present day is head and shoulders above most mall concepts: American Cookies, Wetzel Pretzel, and TCBY are in that category as far as I’m concerned. And the general ambiance of the mall is great especially around the holidays. The melancholy echo of Christmas music and liminal space vibe of your footsteps as you traverse the place after all stores have closed is undeniable. The ice rink is another sight to see as it’s an official size that Hockey is played, events, and free skate for the general public.
To this day there are a lot of excellent stores you can shop in, with a wide variety of items that will have something for everyone in the family. It’s the place to go grab a gift for the normie in your family on birthdays, and holidays especially. Go early in the morning if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of annoyed people trying to shop.
What is in danger with the loss of places like these is a meeting place: for families, for old people to power-walk before the place opens, for teenagers to aimlessly roam and hang-out.
What has been lost? Representation. A mixture of both soulless corporate and smaller local business stores. Not just GAP and LULULEMON etc
Beyond all that this particular mall is a great place to go to still if you want to get all your shopping done at once. It’s safe, except for Christmas, no place is considered or can be safe when you have such a large gap between the privileged and the “lower” class. It’s a symptom of capitalism more than a statement on one particular group of people. But alas, stay aware, don’t leave valuables in plain sight, and...
Read moreThe family and I have been shopping here for years and it's usually great.
We brought our 2.5 yr old granddaughter today and went to the large playground with the castle. We've brought her here before and she likes the play area.
Initially everything was great but this being a weekday, and school is back, it was mainly little kids which was perfect or so we thought.
This time the security guard kept coming over and telling parents they can't be inside the castle. In the past parents went in with the little ones, 2-3 years old, that need help getting around or can get hurt easily.
The parents, including my wife and daughter-in-law, we're just standing right inside the door because these are 2,3, and 4 year olds, little children that can get hurt.
I understand about safety for the children, plenty of weirdos out there, but we're talking multiple parents here, always watching their kids, and there's no way anything would happen to anyone's child.
Our granddaughter suddenly starting screaming inside the castle and then went quiet so my wife and DIL rushed inside and found two boys about 4 yrs old sitting on top of her and she couldn't breathe.
As soon as my wife and DIL went in the security person rushed over and started yelling to get out.
So I'm asking you, Memorial City Mall, how are you going to explain it when a parent that's not as attentive misses something like this and their child gets seriously hurt or worse?
You need to either get another security person to work at the castle or use common sense and have them come inside every five minutes or so and check...
