Had it been only my pre-op and my final room stay this would have been a 5 star review. The pre-op nurses where absolutely amazing! (Aida, Nina, and Ji) went above and beyond to make sure I was okay. However, post-op was not the best experience. After surgery I was handled roughly which led to pain and need of pain medication from the nurse. Ting the nurse assigned to me arrived in my room without introducing herself saw me and left me without a call button or asking if I needed anything. I was left alone for about an hour after a major surgery, feeling thirsty and needing to use the restroom. I kept calling for help or for anyone to come to my room for an hour and it wasn't till my mom found me that she was able to help me. At that point the nurse was calling telling her I was in my room and my mom informed her she had already found me and I needed assistance. She came back and I told her I needed to go the restroom and she unplugged me and left me there with no help even though I could not get up on my own. The nurse Ting came back and I informed her that she left me unattended for an hour and I needed her help. She explained she had just gotten there and needed to get settled. She then tried to justify not checking in on me and when I asked for more help she left again. I then asked for the charge nurse (Kathy) and Ting told me she conveyed my concerns (which she didn't even know). When Kathy (no itroduction) came in she came in raising her voice as I tried to explain how I was feeling anxious for not getting the care I needed. She then said my mother needed to leave as visiting hours were over. I informed her I did not feel safe and would like for my mother to stay at which Kathy rose her voice and said no because she would get in trouble and I could talk to administration the next day. When I began crying she raised her voice and said "are you listening to me!" " I am the charge nurse Kathy and I am telling you the policy! She cannot stay." I did not feel okay and was still under the effects of anesthesia to try and convey everything I was feeling scared off. She then pushed for me to get anxiety medicine to "calm down." I told her I did not want it as I have very specific anxiety medication I take. She said I was not listening to her and was going to send in her supervisor to talk to me. As she was leaving she said "I understand exactly what you are going through," which is the least accurate and uncompassionate response she could have given me. I had just battled cancer and had a breast removed she had no idea how I was feeling. The supervisor came in and didn't introduce herself, I have no idea to this day what her tittle was or her name. She began telling the policy and when I finally was able to explain what had been happening she allowed my mother to stay. My mother who has worked in a hospital setting for 37 years let her know that compassion goes a long way. She then said she was going to give me medicine to calm down which I again stated I did not want it because I felt they were just trying to make me quiet. A new nurse Tinesha came in who introduced herself and spend several minutes calming my panic attack (without medication) and saying it was okay to cry. She was so compassionate asking what I needed and what she could do for me. Later she came in and said the director had gotten involved and she was informed I was moving rooms. As she was taking me to the eight floor Kathy came out and asked what was happening. As I was leaving she said "you can thank me I made it happen." At the eight floor my nurses (Biridiana, R'riane, Henry) went above and beyond, making me laugh and made my stay turn around. Had it not been for (Aida, Nina, Ji, Tinesha, Biridiana, R'Riane, and Henry) my experience would have...
Read moreA Horrible Experience with Sentinel Hospital’s ER
I had an extremely disappointing experience with Sentinel Hospital’s ER that I feel compelled to share. Due to a medical issue, I was sent to the hospital via ambulance from urgent care under the advice that I would receive prompt attention. However, what followed was a series of shocking miscommunications, negligence, and poor treatment.
After arriving at the ER around 2 PM, I was taken to a waiting area with three other patients. Despite being placed in the system initially, I was informed hours later that I was not in the system, and my presence there had somehow gone unnoticed. By 6 PM, after numerous inquiries, they finally "put me back" in the system. This failure in basic administrative processes is unacceptable.
Meanwhile, I observed multiple patients in the same room, all struggling with respiratory issues, being ignored for hours. Nurses repeatedly asked these patients if they had received oxygen treatments, only for them to respond "no" each time. It was clear that there was no communication among the staff, leaving patients neglected and at risk.
When I was finally seen by a doctor at 8 PM, they informed me that I likely had asthma or COPD and recommended an overnight observation. I agreed but mentioned I hadn’t eaten all day and requested food, which they assured me would be provided. Hours passed, and I never received anything to eat.
Adding to this chaos, I experienced a debacle with blood draws. Around 8 PM, a nurse drew three vials of blood, which were handed off to another staff member. Later, a different technician came to take more blood but claimed there was no record of the previous draw in the system. When I asked her to confirm, she left, returning much later with no clear answers.
The technician who was attempting the second blood draw struggled to find a vein in my arm and suggested taking it from the back of my hand. Given her earlier difficulty, I was doubtful that this would result in a good experience, as drawing from the back of the hand is often more painful. When I asked why they couldn’t draw blood from the IV already in my left arm, she said only a nurse could do that and added, “I’m not a nurse.” When I requested that she find a nurse to assist, she flatly told me, “That’s not my job—you have to find a nurse yourself.”
Throughout my stay, no one took responsibility for resolving issues or providing answers. The staff constantly deflected responsibility, often telling me to “ask someone else.” Communication was entirely broken, and there was no teamwork or collaboration. Instead of feeling cared for, I was left to fend for myself, wandering to the nursing station repeatedly, only to be met with unhelpful and dismissive responses.
One positive note is that the young doctor who treated me was polite and attentive, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, his professionalism was overshadowed by the overall dysfunction of the hospital staff.
By 12:30 AM—more than 10 hours after I arrived—I was still hungry, frustrated, and had yet to be formally admitted. Also, i was supposed to get my oxygen treatment immediately, which I never received. The lack of professionalism, communication, and basic patient care at this hospital was appalling. This is not how a hospital should function, and it is certainly not how patients should be treated.
I strongly urge Sentinel Hospital to reevaluate their processes, improve their staff communication, and provide basic training in patient care and etiquette. No one deserves the...
