This short and easy hiking trail runs along Gold Creek atop a historic wooden flume installed in the 1890s and still in operation today (see pictures). The Flume Trail is made of wooden boards that can be slippery when wet. This flume is part of Juneau's first hydroelectric power plant and is heavily forested with alder, spruce, hemlock, cottonwood, and willow trees. Here you can enjoy views of birds, red squirrels, porcupines, and the occasional bear, as well as Gold Creek, the canyon, and waterfalls. Read moreA very nice, if short, walk along a historical path. The trail is a re-built replica of a gold-mining flume from the gold rush era in late 1890s. About 2 miles round trip of level walking over the original flume path. If you are feeling more adventurous, the flume trail connects to the old gold mine trail, and the trail to the Juneau tram.
The west end is a bit tricky to find and in s residential area with limited parking. The east end has much more parking space, and also is the connection to the trail to the gold mine and tram trails. Also in the east end area is the gold mine museum about a mile further...
Read moreAlthough frequent rocks slides make this area somewhat dangerous at times and also impassable occasionally, the elevation gives a suburb view of downtown Juneau from above and it is an easy hike that is almost completely flat with no elevation gain. The only level hike I can think of that is above sea level by more then a few feet, with lake shores and waterfront boardwalks being the only other options for those who disdain...
