It was a nice museum, but REALLY dropped the ball when it came to the last section, the one I was most interested in, and looking forward to, the Geology. With how geology rich Alaska is, I could not believe they had basically NOTHING relating to volcanos, earthquakes, orology, samples of not only gold, but other minerals rich in the state. Glaciers, not a thing on glaciers at all. It was not worth the money I paid to get in, and they did not even give me the correct change back, did not notice until I got back on the ship. The coolest part of the whole thing were the massive ravens OUTSIDE the museum that a homeless man was feeding, they must have been about 3 feet tall!! I wish I had taken pictures of them, as they were not there when I left the museum. Take my $37 you did not give back from my $50 and use it improving your...
Read moreWhat is Alaska's biggest most grandiose Museum. However, it was certainly not the best. To be politically correct with all it's exhibits Limited both the accuracy and information value of this Museum. Large open display with way more placards and signage than actual exhibits dominate. Many interesting exhibits have little or no information on the actual artifact, especially once you get away from Indian artifacts into industrial or historical artifacts There has been more money spent on this museum than all of the museums in the entire rest of the state but the result although very highbrow is not worthy of the money spent and the potential wasted when one views what could have been done with the same money and space Very pretty Museum very modern and openly laid out, but although very pretty it was fairly shallow...
Read moreI really wanted to like this museum. There are lots of really interesting historical pieces and Alaska has a rich history to draw from. However it is pricy for the size ($12) and I did not find the story very well told. There were so many artifacts crammed in each case I got lost trying to figure out what they all were. When I got to the section of the museum dedicated to the gold rush I was so confused by the order of events that I left with little more knowledge than when I started. Go to sandy beach and walk through the ruins of the mine there(with free placards for you to read) to get a better picture. The state museum does had some wonderful native Alaskan weavings and other pieces. There is a whale cleaning suit that was...
