Simmons Island was donated to the city by the family of Zalmon Simmons, founder of the Simmons Company, manufacturer of bedding and furniture. Originally called "First Island" and then "Washington Island", the Simmons family purchased most of the residences of the island and moved the houses elsewhere in the city. What remained was a rolling sandy island which had since been permanently connected to the mainland. During the Depression, the WPA improved the area: building the beach house and planting pilings out into the lake to catch sandy silt and build up the beach you see today.
