Can't understand how anyone could complain about one of the finest family/employee-owned companies in our city & state? I've lived here for 27 years. I buy a new car on Halloween every four years. If I have ever had any trouble w/ a tire/tires, you can stop into any location, and if it's an easy enough fix (nail in a tire, tire damage, airleaks, etc.), they do it for free even if you've never been in one of their stores or not. They will build your name, car & phone number into their database just for ease of tracking what they've ever done to your vehicle, but will never call or hassle you in any way, shape or form. You need to replace all 4 of your tires (or 2)? Les Schwab is completely price competitive with other major automotive/tire companies in Portland. They won't price match, but if you think dickering around at Discount Tires or Sears or even Costco to save $10 (perhaps, could actually be the cheapest quote, too) that's your issue. Uber-courteous. They get your car up on a rack, address your concern, come back out and explain to you what your options are & they are extremely well-stocked for all sorts of tire manufacturers. Today is a perfect example. I blew out a tire last night after clicking across a curb. AAA brought my car to my house within 45 minutes (it was a Sunday yesterday, no one was open). I placed a call to two Les Schwab centers and neither had the tire in stock and I need a functioning car tomorrow, no matter what. So while American Tire Company, Sears, Discount Tires, Costco and Tire Factory all said they could order the tire and have it in "a day or two, could be three", my call to Les Schwab: "Can you hold for a minute?" Sure I could, it's not like I'm going anywhere! "One minute later, the rep came back & said they didn't have the tire in stock but are rushing one from one of their Gresham stores & can install a replacement tire in Lake Oswego 90 minutes from me writing this. Lifetime guarantee & Les Schwab isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. (American Tire Company is actually not a "real" company anymore, BTW... they were bought by "Discount Tires"). Just what I want, companies that act like drones & treat their customers poorly for substandard tires. I've also had factory tires placed on one of my Acura's when I bought it new. A year later, the treads were all goofy & I felt ripped off. The Acura dealership wanted close to $2,000 for the same four tires I bought, instead, from Les Schwab. They paid me for all four of my tires (I was hydroplaning after a year of use?), replaced all four & only charged me for two. My old tires they simply sell to folks who don't worry or care about tread wear or are in a bind & can only buy used tires that are still usable. I have nothing negative to say about Les Schwab, their staff, their loyalty, pricing & their expertise. Just two months ago, during my 2-year check-up with my Volvo, the repair department said I had a small tear on one tire (hmmmmm, wonder how it got there), must replace all four (All wheel drive cars with tires of different tread wear can screw up your transmission & literally trash your car's engine in a matter of weeks). I said "thanks, maybe another time". On my way home, I stopped into Les Schwab & showed them this little tag tear on one of the tires. I told the rep there what Volvo had to say & he just looked at me & said (while we were standing in hard pouring rain & he was fine standing with me while we got soaked). His take on the tear/flap: "That tire is in no danger of being a problem for you. If you feel uncomfortable because of that little flap, here's the solution". From his pocket, the rep took out a rag & small tube of superglue, dried the flap and applied the glue for about a minute, pulled his finger away and said, "There, just like new, guaranteed." I paid nothing for his time, this was during rush hour and the entire issue was resolved by Les Schwab in less than 5 minutes. No wait, either. Les Schwab is a renowned Oregon company. Ā Ā Ā Read moreUsed to swear by Les Schwab service and quality and have used them a bunch in the past. After my last experience, I'm afraid I won't be returning anymore. Their service and value just isn't what it used to be, in my opinion. Went in for a set of new tires. Check in "ok".
The person I talked to was friendly, yet a little condescending and uninformative. I was given a choice of 3-4 tires. No brand names, or any other useful information/attributes were given about the tires outside of "miles", "price", and "this one has the mountain symbol on it" that he actually "drew" for me twice on paper. I've shopped tires many times to feel a bit belittled by the whole experience. Being in a rush, I picked one, knowing full well that I'm paying about $200 - $300 more than I could for a better brand/quality elsewhere.
Pick up was horrible. I was given my keys in the office, with no indication of where my car is. I assumed it would be simple to find. I walked around a while until I finally found it near the back of the lot behind the shop. The car was parked backwards, meaning I had to reverse through a very narrow/twisty channel of other parked cars in the dark in pouring rain, which made me pretty nervous, even as an experienced driver.
The whole experience left me with a fairly sour taste in my mouth, especially given the significant "service/name" surcharge that I've always been "ok" with paying.
I spent extra time researching what I actually paid for afterwards, and confirmed that I did, indeed, pay almost $300 more than I would have, had I bought the tires myself elsewhere and had them installed at Costco (or other shop). That's no short change.
Sorry, but business will be going...
