The store was the very first record store that I ever went to back in 2011. The best friend Chad introduced me to Love Garden Sounds and just because of the ever so expanding variety of what LGS.. I musically found myself here just in time to graduate high-school in 2012 and dive headfirst into the world punk and noise! LGS has vinyl and CDs GALORE! AND CASSETTES!
New Arrivals regularly with vinyl, CDs and Cassettes! eNewsletter by email that I've been following for years. The staff are musical geniuses when it comes to being informed on what they have and just having a great discussion about damn near anything music. Massive Dollar Bin of Vinyl and CDs. You can find some serious gems within! Vinyl is what LGS specializes in the most- they've got a record selection unmatched by most record stores in the area. Same goes for their CDs! Tapes, the shelf of kinda small but it's understandable because tapes arent as popular as vinyl and CD. But the cassette tapes aren't hidden, they're in the dead center of the store! I NEED ATTENTION! HEHE
Love Garden is owned by Kelly, he's a cool guy and a nice friend- known him for over 10 years since I first started going. Dude knows music! And not just that but, LGS is astonishingly cheaper than what you'd expect. I found countless gems in Love Garden over the years that are more expensive online. When I said earlier that they have an ever expanding variety, damn near anything you can think of musically, they probably have it and if they don't have it they will probably order it for you. Lawrence is a College town after-all. Home to the legendary KU and also LGS is in the epicenter of a handful of highly reputable Venues where smaller and bigger artists regularly play. Liberty Hall, Bottleneck, Replay Lounge and The Granada! And I believe LGS has musicians play there sometimes..I remember that in the past.
The store is spacious walking down the main part, they've got two turntables that you can use to demo used vinyl. Can't demo CDs or tapes, but they always check their stock and I've never bought any faulty products here. so in the front of their store, on the side they've got a bunch of sound systems, speakers, tape decks and all that sort of good stuff so not only can you buy your records here but you can also buy the equipment to play them and they're decently priced in my opinion. On the front desk there's always a bunch of scenes, you can buy stickers, lots of merchandise including shirts, sweatshirts, hats, pendants and all else in the back.
Parking out front costs because of the parking meter but just park in the back as long as you're only there for 2 hours. Front and back entrance and exit. Public punk rock restroom in the basement is always clean! There's an abundance of posters that decorate the entire store, Love Garden is the ultimate space in Lawrence Kansas for music appreciation. LGS also has a damn good stock of LOCAL artists which I've dived heavily into!
Man I could just keep writing positive things about Love Garden Sounds! Just a truly magnificent independently owned record store found it and based in Lawrence Kansas downtown Massachusetts Street since 1990 although they've changed locations once- I believe. I believe they used to be upstairs and down the street. Not sure where..I'm only familiar with them as they've been since 2011.
Of all the places that I enjoy frequenting when I'm around, love garden is definitely one of them and I'm going to truly miss them when I leave the country. You also can buy from their Discogs and website and they'll...
Read moreOwner can be pretty moody.
I was in the store twice today and the first time he was nice and helpful, as he answered several questions that I had. I then came back a few hours later with five vinyl albums and I was going to ask if he would offer me $1.00 each, in store credit, as I was then planning on spending about $45.00 on an album that I highly desire. As soon as I walked through the door, I started speaking to him, "I was gonna see what you would give me..." and before I could finish, he immediately cut me off very abruptly and rudely and said "You have to make an appointment, I'm not looking at those, we're several days out on appointments, etc, etc."
I was more than a little put off because I was in quite a good mood before he snapped at me. Honestly, this experience adversely affected my mood, but only briefly, because then I realized that he's the one who is in a bad way and it had nothing to do with me.
If you read this as the owner, then I would like to say that you had no business treating me that way and you could have articulated the exact same message more gracefully and in a pleasant manner.
Unfortunately, I will no longer be bringing any business to your store unless you reply with an apology and a solution. This is unfortunate because as far as I'm aware, there are no other record stores like this in Lawrence, but I'm very big on mutual respect and feeling like my business is welcome and appreciated, especially regarding a small, local business.
I hope you can get over whatever it is that's bothering you, but please don't take it out on your customers. And truthfully, in a business like you have, you should not be thinking of the people who support your business as merely customers conducting commerce, but you should think of us more as guests, similar to how you would have a guest in your home. I can promise you from experience, this simple shift in mentality will allow you to build more rapport with people and trust me, it makes a difference when it comes to where people choose to spend their...
Read moreLocal record shop!!! These things used to be the way people got music, in a personal, unique, intimate environment, this place serves as a dual purpose: music store, interactive museum/petting zoo, complete with the "I'm really cool" ambiance you get when you're friends with someone in the band.. but in this case the band is Love Garden, the venue is downtown Lawrence, and the show starts when you walk in the door. Go ask a human being if there's some music they think you might like, the algorithms you've been relying on to gauge your taste aren't always right.. we already let our phones tell us where to eat, who to date, and who to be friends with.. go interact with the world! ..and don't trust everything you read on the internet.. except this review, I'm all honesty when it comes to promoting good in the world, so buy local, the industry is punks, and think for yourself, by supporting a dying art form, physical copies of music, and validating your existence on the internet feels way better when you had to go somewhere to do it. So "check in".. "like" .. and "tag" your favorite new concept, buying music from people who...
