Awesome little hike!
his is my favorite kind of hike, the kind where you can do some peak pine and fern forest bathing while listening to the melody of the song birds and chipmunks (don't be one of those unhinking sheep that isn't comfortable with silence and plays music on nature trails).
Cool sign at the entrance describing that you might see two of my personal favorite personalities inhabited the forest (Teddy Roosevelt and squirrels) showing thw Roosevelt elk and a unique kind of squirrel.
My spirit creature is actually the mighty chipmunk because of their Twitchy nature and love of the forest trees and climbing and scampering around on them, but the squirrel is a cousin - and aren't cousins a great gift, just as this cool nature trail just a mile from the main road is a great gift to the denizens of the forest and the citizens walk among them.
P.S. I was going to do "Drift Creek Falls," but I dispersed camp in the woods nearby, and the number of cars driving up the road around 9:00 a.m. was an absurd amount compared to the previous two days, so I figured they were all heading to Drift Creek Falls, and I didn't want to hike amongst a ton of people since that defeats the purpose to me in much thanks to whoever reviewed that trail two days earlier and mentioned how packed it gets because I would have had been there otherwise, and likely had more anxiety and enjoyment from the drive and amount of people...
Read moreThis is a very beautiful large forested area with trails. You can always photograph here, even when the beach is gray with rain or obscured by fog. The trailhead is up a bit, so the understory is mostly clear of brush. Loop trails begin at the parking area. I recommend starting on the trail to the left of the gate. All of the trails have steep sections, but the center trail is very steep. The forest itself is the point of photographic interest, so you need not feel compelled to walk in very far. The view over the top of the ridge is of a logged area, and is not photographically compelling. Students from the nearby high school come here for some peace...

Now it's got a lot of downed limbs that makes it hard to walk, dont get too attached with the area they left somewhat green ,they're surveying it for new road...
